Oil reading question - Panamera turbo - 2010

Hello,

I'm pretty new to porsche ownership so sorry if these are stoopid questions. I did a fair bit of googleing but no real answer.

The other day I had an oil at minimum yellow light come on, so I popped the bonnet to see where the oil filler was. After that I can't get the car to give me an oil reading when I go into the menu, I get the 'Oil Level Currently Not Available' message. So i took it out for a drive for a few miles, parked it on level ground. turned the car off, left it for two minutes etc. but still no reading. I've tried again just warming the car up for ten minutes and followed the same process. Still the same message.

As it was saying it was at minimum I'm hoping that there is enough oil, but just enough. So I'm reluctant to use it too much as I can't get a reading.

The oil pressure on idle is 2 bar.

So a few questions:

Am i doing the oil reading thing all wrong? It was working before I opened the bonnet but I read it resets if you open the bonnet so maybe I shouldn't of? Although how you top the oil up and check it seems like a bit of mystery if you have to wait for the system to reset.

If it was at minimum how much driving can I do in the car once that warning has come on?

How long does the system take to register an oil level - I've driven the car about 5 - 7 miles and it's still not registering. Do i need to drive it? can I just warm it up on my driveway?

It does make me all feel very stupid... great car but i miss a dip stick!

any thoughts gratefully recived.

Cheers

Mark

Oil reading if it is on yellow you need to put in oil Mobil ow 40 each division on scale is 200ml measurement is taken in time about 15 minutes

Hi Mark,

As Justin said, each mark on the scale is 200ml, so if it's on the yellow you need to put in a litre. However, you can carry on driving at the yellow level for quite some time if necessary. Sooner or later you will get a red warning and then you know you must top up immediately.

I've never timed it or checked milage, but it does seem to take forever to get a new reading! Getting a low oil warning light is useful but, as you say, it would be nice to have a good old fashioned dipstick as well.

Good luck.

thanks for the replies...

took it for a drive today and the electronic dip stick showed a measurement - on yellow so added 250ml that's given me one bar. So i'll drive it for a little bit and check it again and add another 250ml until i'm confident i'm doing it right don't want to overfil.

thanks again all.

Hi Mark, you may find it’s an "engine at normal operating temperature " criterion that prevents the oil level reading display rather than a minimum time/distance. In the current weather getting to a c 90-100degC oil temp can take quite a while from a cold start.
