oil seal

just started doing a cambelt change on my s2, took off the covers to find a fair amount of oil in there. it looks most likely it's the camshaft oil seal as there is oil right at the top although some may have travelled on the belt, is this the most common seal for leaking and is it straight forward to replace?

You can buy seal kits to replace all the seals on the front of the engine (cam, crank, balance shafts and maybe others). It might be advisable to do this while you're in there. You don't want oil in the area where your belts are - it should be dry. And don't forget to replace the balance shaft belt as well.

Behind the camshaft pulley on 8valve cars, and I suspect on 16valve cars too, there is a very important, almost invisible transparent washer... I understand they leak without it, but it is frequently overlooked or omitted by those not "in the know". Just something worth bearing in mind.

Tref.

hiya jim, hope your well, thanks for that and you also tref, my baby going in next week, one of the things i am having looked at, is a oil leak mentioned on the mot, i have had a white cotton sheet on the garage floor, so i can check for any oil or fluid leaks when shes parked up, so far not a drip on the sheet of any type of fluid and shes used half a litre of oil in the last 4 months, so hoping its nothing too serious regards jason p
