Oil smoke

I've got a 2001 986 3.2s. Yesterday I drove up a long steep hill at 5krpm, then when I got to the top I went to 7krpm. At this point, a rather large cloud of oil smoke came out the back, and I thought I had cooked the engine. I took my foot off the throttle, and it drive normally (and slowly) to my destination. After about 2 hours I started it to go home, and a load of smoke came out the back.

When I started it this morning it was fine. It's old and has done 100k+ miles, also it mainly does short journeys.

Is there an oil/air separator on these engines?

Ta. :)

Classic symptoms of Air Oil Separator failure. Get a new one fitted asap. I believe part is under £100 + labour cost.

Don't rush to change the separator it may just be the cold weather. Boxsters do smoke when left in the cold. Mine has done over 130,000 and I have changed the separator but when it is cold it still smokes on start up whether I have left it for an hour or two days. Wait until the weather gets warmer and if it still does it then change the separator. Oh and do it yourself, takes about two hrs, only two pipes and two bolts.

It sounds like the air/oil separator, you will know when you try to remove the oil filler cap with the engine running. The suction will be apparent as the engine is trying to pull air through the filler cap.
