oil tank

Oil has started weeping from pit holes on the front face of my oil tank (behind rear wheel). Apparantely they can corrode from the inside out due to condensation and lack of use of the car. Can anyone advise the best way to remedy / replace.

I'm taking mine off to to attend to a little corrosion in the engine bay whilst the engine is out. Seems straightforward have a read here

I've a related problem; I noticed last w/end that the rubber hose which joins the tank near the filler and disappears somewhere rund the back of the engine is extremely cracked and perished. Is it just a breather pipe or does it carry oil? In other words if it fractures am I going to suffer a immediate loss of oil?

If you're talking about one of the thick rubber pipes and particularly the rubber one which connects to a metal pipe then you should replace them asap. Try here for a good price and some advice too.

The oil level sender on the tank (about half way up) can be removed without draining the oil. not sure where you mean when you say the oil tank union though? Clean the nuts very well and be careful you do not want one to sear off.

When I did mine I just used a bit of cork gasket material make sure you put the sender back in the same way up. Had to crimp a new connection onto one of the wires at the same time.
