Oil tank

I have to fix a leak from the oil level sender/oil tank union; I plan to unbolt the sender, install a new gasket and reinstall the sender.

Does anyone know if I need to drain the oil from the tank before I do that? In other words is the oil level (when cold) below the level of the sender unit?
