Oil temp gauge

Why did the 996 not come with an oil temp gauge or is my c4 missing it? I don't think the OBC shows the oil temp does it?

Thanks,

Welcome Lasitha!

I can't tell you why, but it was never available, not even as an option. The OBC won't display it either. Apart from an expensive retrofit, if you just want to monitor it occasionally, I can only suggest getting a cheap OBD2 hand scanner, and plugging it into the diagnostic connector.

I guess because newer designed cars are more reliable and it was not deemed necessary any more. I don't think my 996 has a starting handle either :)

Nice one... i just think that when taking 'any' car on track it's much safer to monitor these things. Maybe coming from a highly modified turbo charged car, i'm just a little bit more worried about things going pop.

I note that the 997 has an oil temp gauge. Lots of other pukka sporty cars have them too, so I was surprised to see it missed off the 996.

Its important to know the oil temp as it matters more than the water temp (which heats up much quicker) for when you can safely razz the engine.

I'd rather have an oil temp gauge than the pointless battery monitor thing.

My bro's Skyline tells you the temperature of the engine oil, gearbox oil, exhaust, water, turbo, as well as injector pressure, boost etc. Now THAT's what I call engine diagnostics...

The 986 engine has an oil to water heat exchanger. It is that silver thing on top of the engine with fins on it. When the car is cold the coolant warms up the oil. When the engine is hot the oil is cooled by the coolant.

The 997 also has a heat exchanger. When the 997 came out I wondered why the volt meter gauge was replaced by an oil temp gauge. I do have a theory.

On the older Boxsters you could push 2 buttons on the a/c display to see the oil temp.

Yes please, what is your theory? I really like the oil temp guage on my 997tt.

The only use the battery thingy on my 996 S was when it said the battery was flat and the car wasn't going to start but I had already noticed that!!
