TSCaptain, fountain of all knowledge, posted this in response to a similar question:

I believe the 991 engines have "thermal management" which allows the oil to run hotter when under lighter loads, i.e NOT in Sport/Sport+ when it is then controlled to the lower 90C temp. You would have thought the 991 RS would know that.....[:D]

Thermal management

The thermal management system regulates the temperature in the engine and gearbox through the intelligent manipulation of heat flow. In this way, the engine and gearbox reach their optimum operating temperature sooner. As a result, fuel consumption is reduced by means of the increased combustion efficiency and lubrication performance

Sounds right.
My 997 Turbo ran the coolant hotter than the oil but my 991 Turbo S runs the other way around. I mentioned this to the local OPC who merely said that as long as the parameters in the hand book were not exceeded it is not a problem.

I mentioned this to my instructor (he really did know what he was talking about!) at my Silverstone test day and he said that it was normal for the 991 oil to run hotter and was surprised that the OPC did not know this.
Cheers

Thanks Peter
I was poodling along and NOT in sports mode, so that makes perfect sense now!! i will just keep it in sports mode from now on.....who really wants to poodle along anyway
