Oil temp

Just a quick question , on the oil temp gauge what should it read when warm, on my car it never seems to get much above the first white mark ( and yes I do sometimes go more than 30mph before you ask!!!!)

On my 3.2, the oil temperature sits at the first mark (1/3) when the engine is warm, rising slowly to about half way if I sit in traffic for a while( and back down when I start moving again). The most it has ever reached is the second mark (2/3), in a very hot French traffic jam, but my car has a fan on the front radiator (non-standard on mine, but, with a supercharger making the engine potentially a bit hotter, I thought it was a good idea).

So far, the engine has done 110,000 miles, with no problems/leaks, so I assume that these readings are OK.

As an aside, I use Mobil 1; I don' t know if this would effect the temerature, but I do know that the engine burns less with Mobil 1 than standard oil. Dearer oil, but lasts longer. Worth it ? That depends on head/heart thinking, I think.
 
Mine' s about the same as John' s. I use Magnatec and have had the engine rebuilt recently.

Rate of oil burn I think depends more on the condition of the engine. Until I had the engine rebuilt I was doing 500 miles /litre, now I do over 2500 miles / litre.

Mobil 1 is thinner and so for older engines it is suggested you use slightly thicker oil, even Esso 10/40.

Some of us would call the oil temp gauge an idiot type gauge; how or what is the temp? We have a digital probe meter (temp) at work. I might borrow this to get some idea to bench mark the markings.
From my days of modified VW' s(air-cooled), 180C was considered good healthy oil temp.
On the oil front, I also am a Mobil 1 user, using 15W-50. I wonder if any one would be interested in buying Mobil 1 at a cheaper price. I may have found a wholesaler who may be able to do a deal. It would perhaps depend on the number litres brought. If enough people were interested, then maybe I could get an ever better deal.
Mobil 1 can be brought for around 19 pounds for 4 ltrs in France. Any one going to france????
Will post the oil deal when I know more.[;)]

Buying in bulk might just be a good idea - assuming that we all live near enough to pick up ' our' portion, and have something to put it in.

I didn' t know that Mobil 1 was that sort of price in France - I normally take enough spare to last the whole trip. Mind you, as my car hardly burns any oil, I rarely even have to dip into the spare, anyway.
So, on the basis that France beckons in June (can' t think why I am going, or where, but it will come to me !), I will investigate prices. Unfortunately, it will be in a Cavalier (a passenger, honest ! I am trying to get him (driver) to buy a 944, as he apparently must have an hatch-back and power steering; when he drove my 3.2, he told me that he could hardly turn the steering wheel whilst parking)

I can find the exact temps for you but for the un-numbered gauges for the mid 80' s the marks can be approximated to 150/200/250/300 degF starting from the first white block (not line) and going up. Also, if you look on the far left side of your gauge, you will see tiny little numbers that can only be seen if you have young eyes and put your head at an angle.

Rather than being lazy, I looked up the numbers. They are:

- first lower white block...60 degC ( 140 degF)
- next white line up.........90 degS ( 194 degF)
- next white line up........120 degC( 248 degF)
-bottom of next-up red block...150 degC (302 degF)

In simple terms, think of these points as 150/200/250/300 degF.

[:D]Replying to my earlier note; I have talked with the supplier and it would seem like I am onto a possible cheaper source for Mobil 1 15w-50.
I would like to guage the number of interested people so that I can perhaps get an even better deal.
The current offer is based on one person buying one 4ltr pack of Mobil 1, 15w-50, sports (fully synthetic). Price £ 26.80.
Of course this price will drop as the order size is increased.
I did ask if the supplier would be interested in offering a discount for club members.
This is a futher possibility, and may require someone from HQ contacting the supplier.
Can all those interested please contact me.
Also on offer is a 60 litre keg, same oil, price £6.08 per ltr. This could also be improved (maybe).

Cheap oil - always a good idea. So, count me in, given the following.

Back to my original questions:-

Location - I am in London W6, don' t mind some travel, but may lose the cost effectiveness if too far.
A small point, but the larger volumes would require individual containers per person. Not necessarily a problem, just an idea to be solved.

I am interested in cheaper mobil 1, though currently I get my mobil1 15w50 from teeside autotech £105 for 4 x 4 litres (bought some yesterday as I was in the area - though they charged me £110 last time I had it delivered)

Also I wonder how much we would have to buy to cut out the middleman and get it direct from Mobil
