oil temperature

Hi folks,

I am looking for some advice on oil temperatures for my 85 carrera cabrio. During normal driving the temperature stays above the first white line. (Describing the gauge as having a white block at the bottom, two white lines in between and a red block on top). The pipes to the front cooler are hot so I presume the thermostat in the wheel arch is working. Sitting in traffic however the temperatue will nearly reach the top white line after 10 minutes of standing still.( There are some minor oil leaks but when the temp increases these get worse resulting in smoke from the engine bay. I have never noticed the temperature increasing like this in my previous 911's. Oil pressure is V good. I presume the temp should stay on or near the first white line under these conditions ?. Can anyone advise ?

Hi,

IIRC my 911 Cab used to sit at 1/3rd temp on the gauge for the majority of the time.

Not long after I got it, I was sitting in a traffic jam in heavy rain, and watched the temp rise on the gauge, as it reached just over half way, a huge plume of white smoke (I thought) came from behind the right front wheel arch. I pulled over, thinking there was some disaster, and called the Porsche garage, to be informed that the thermostat for the oil cooler opened when the gauge was at half way, and the smoke was rainwater evaporating from the outside of the oil cooler as the hot oil hit the radiator.......

Just beyond half way was as far as it ever went, even on track days.

As you say, the thermostat is in the rear wheel arch, so I also assumed that the oil pipes running to the front would also be cold until the gauge reached half way

I haven't give it a real good blast yet, but I will do today. Haven't had any hot weather since I got it so that may be a factor as well.

Let's see some photos of the new beast then?!

I am getting the rear bumper sprayed next week due to the aluminium having corroded, nothing too serious, then I will post some pics when its done, if I can figure out how to do it.
I reckon I've got a bit of a bargain, 4 owners, last one for 8 years, 107k, full OPC service history, all at Parker & Parker in Kendal, the odd very small rust bubble apart from the bumper. Drives nice (not that I'm an expert) with no smoke or strange noises. All for ten and a half grand. In short I'm well chuffed !

Seems you did get a bargain there.

Neither of my cars have ever got the temp gauge more than 1/3rd of the way round/up.
I guess that in Saudi Arabia things would be different.

Gave it a bit a blast the other day and the temperature got about a third of the way. My main concern was that the stat was stuck partly open, but the pipes upto the stat were hot and after it they were cool, so I guess theres no problem.

I wouldn't worry! I've had my car for eight years and it only ever goes above the half way mark when I take the car on the track or if the weather is VERY hot. Most of the time it sits between the end of the first solid white block and the half way mark. I never extend the car until the indicator has moved just beyond this first white band - this can take a good few miles.

ENJOY!

Yep - Mine's the same. Only gets near the half-way mark if I'm sitting in traffic, after a long run on a hot day. Other than that it's between the first band and the mid point.
