Oil Temperature

Hi all, my first post having took the plunge and bought my first 911.

My oil temperature does not get above the first broad white band on the gauge, is this normal. The 2 pipes going to the front oil cooler do not get hot so I am assuming the oil is not hot enough for the thermostat to open.

Any thoughts ?

Jim.

Hi Jim. The oil pipe's should get hot when the engine's been properly warmed up. I'd check them again after a good blast. If the pipe going to the front is still cold I'd get the thermastat checked by your local specialist. The return pipe never gets really warm unless the cars really been caned.
My dash guage under normal conditions sits about halfway but I guess each gauge could be slightly different. Anyhow, guage besides, the oil pipe should still get hot.

It can take 15 minutes for the oil to get hot enough to open the thermostat, especially if the car is not driven with gusto. Continually doing short trips that don't allow the oil to warm thoroughly will cause a white mayonaise-like gloop to form in the filler neck. You should also be aaware that the oil level can only be checked correctly with the oil hot and the engine ticking over. Give the car a good thrash!
