Oil temps - some observations

My last drive in my 944 was yesterday - delivering it to the new owner in South London.

Over the past few weeks I've been doing a few trips in the car with the engine undertrays removed, and have noticed that on the motorway the oil temps, measured at the filter, so post oil cooler, have been considerably lower, often around 70C. Sump temps were a fairly constant 90C.

Yesterday, with the trays back on, temps were much steadier around 90C

This suggests that there's much more cooling going on with the trays off. Now I know that 70C is a bit lower than normal operating temps, so may not be such a good idea. But for the track it should be very useful.

I think that Chris White has suggested on Rennlist you get much better track cooling with the undertrays off. It would also mean you'd need to swap the standard batwing for a more rigid splitter. Shame I don't have a trackday to test my theory, but I suggested it to the new owner, so I hope he'll try it out.

I noticed a similar benefit when I took the tray off my old hillclimber. It was a demon tweak [:D]

With any radiator you need to consider how to extract the air from the radiator as well as into it. By removing the undertrays you are improving airflow away from the radiator therefore increasing the flow of air through the radiator and its cooling efficiency. Porsche knew this when they designed the car, so as the undertrays are there for aerodynamic purposes (stability at high speed) so designed the radiators to control temps with the restricted flow-through. Like you say for normal driving 70 deg C is too low a temp for your oil, it will be thicker and therefore less effective (I DON'T WANT TO SPARK OFF ANOTHER OIL DEBATE!!). However like you say, on trackdays the extra cooling efficiency might be useful.

Mind you the ambient temps have been a bit cooler recently. Could that be a contributary factor?

I don't think so - and yesterday the trays were back on

fwiw this is specifically about the oil cooling between dropping into the sump and returning to the crank - doesn't touch the coolant during this bit
