OIL THERMOSTAT/REGULATOR

Went out for my first drive of 2006 yesterday having done quite a bit of work to her over the winter, everything appears great but for some reason I decided to check the external oil thermostat (Porsche list it as a regulator) which is housed in the rear wing behind the drivers seat, the pipes from here to the front of the car were cold, does this suggest a problem with the regulator?
I had been out for approx 20 mins to half an hour, would this be long enough for the regulator to allow the oil supply to be sent to the front oil cooler?
If it is not working will it do any damage for the short term whilst I am using it for short trips?
Do you have to buy a new regulator/thermostat or can you refurbish the internals of it?

Any help always appreciated.

Cheers guys

Hi Nick,
I have used my car recently too and in this very cold weather my regulator does not let the oil flow to the front cooler either, the first cooler mounted on the engine is quite capable of doing what is required. I would not be to concerned in this cold weather using the car especially if the regulator was working OK before your winter shut down. My regulator will not let oil flow to the front cooler until the oil temperature gauge reaches the first mark I hope this makes sence. At the moment my gauge reading is about 1/2 way to the first mark while driving in this cold weather.
Cheers
John

Nick,

I drive my SC 30 miles into work every day and after ( what is sometimes an hour journey ) the oil thermostat is still not open. I have to leave it running stationary for about 10 minutes before the oil cooler pipes are hot, in order to check the oil level. 911 engines must run pretty cool in the British climate I guess.

Cheers - Gary

Went for another run today, I was out for a good hour and at one point got stuck in a bit of traffic, once I got home I checked the pipes and one of them (which I assume was the one going to the cooler) was just getting warm upto the drivers footwell so the thernostat must be working ok.

thanks again
