Oil tubes

My car did not use a drop of oil on the round-trip to Le Mans from Glasgow, but since has leaked about 1 litre onto my drive. So have just been to see my indy and we had a good look at the likely sources.

Rocker covers are obviously main culprit and he has ordered a pair. Also bottoms of the timing chain covers. He will replace the seals there.

But he also noticed significant corrosion/oil weep on the tubes that feed oil to/from the crankcase (they are about 1 inch diameter). He was surprised by this ("very common on 964 but this is first time I've seen on a 993"). He is going to make enquiries about how easy these are to change, but he thinks it needs doing.

Anyone else had to change oil tubes?

I think the oil tubes are prone to leaking Mark. Telescopic ones are available for replacement with the engine in situ but if you're doing the timing chain cover gasket the the engine will need to come out anyway so I would go for the fixed length ones.

Did you check that the small oil filter isn't rusted? They are very prone to this if left for much more than a year.

Clyde, we did not actually look at the small oil filter - but it was Brian who was looking at it with me and he said "small oil filter can be a problem but I changed that for you in December" - he has a better memory than me! I did not actually mean gasket - it's the rubber washers around the bolts that Brian says go hard, but he can change the bottom ones without taking the engine out and apparently the top is not a problem because oil does not sit there.

So have you had to change the tubes?

Engine out wont help you change the return tubes for one piece items, you need to split the case to use them!

That would explain why Porsche make the telescopic ones, I did wonder. That probably answers your question Mark - no, I haven't had the tubes replaced but I am keeping an eye on them.

I noticed my oil tubes were beginning to corrode a few years ago and coated them in Dinatrol wax.
I check them each year when I change the oil and they haven't deteriorated since.

The aftermarket CNC alloy versions are so much better than the steel ones and no more expensive
