Oil warning light

I intermiitently get the dash oil warning light come on upon start up, especially if the car has been parked on even a slight incline. Thing is I know the oil level is ok - I checked the dipstick this morning as part of my pre Silverstone check list and it was fine. Started her up - all well, parked just outside the garage on a slight slope and when I restarted her the light came on. After much cursing I put her back in the garage and left her for a while, started her up again and the light staid off and remained so. Oil pressure is just fine and dandy too.

So my question is, are the oil level sensors prone to malfunction/wearing out or might there be another problem lurking ? As I said I know the oil level is fine but the idea of ignoring a red light on the dashboard is a tad un-nerving. [&:]

The warning light for the oil level tends to come on just below half way on the dipstick so as long as you are above that and below the max you will be fine. The shape of the sump tends to make it very fussy on a slight incline, so double check with the dipstick when it is flat and top up to the max for peace of mind.

The oil pressure light is a seperate warning and as long as you haven't seen that one you should be fine.

The level sender is prone to failing; usually on the S2, but if it's the same part there is no reason for that to be the case. It's relatively expensive for what it is and it can only be replaced when the sump is empty as the oil would otherwise come out the hole when it's taken out.

Mine does the same ... I agree about the concern generated by a big red warning light, but I take it as a reminder to top up the oil in the next day or so and try not to worry about it too much.

It seems a lot worse then the car is inclined up at the front. I assumed it was because the level sensor is mounted in the front of the sump, but have never actually searched for it.

Oil.

Mine comes on randomly, sometimes actually during a drive, i.e. not always at startup, so definitely on the blink (pressure & level still fine). I usually just switch the ignition off/on whilst coasting in gear to clear the light - I know I should fix it properly, but begrudge spending that much on something that isn't necessary from a preventative maintenance perspective, or going to make it drive better.

I changed the bulb in the oil light and the "!" light and then they were on all the time. Turned out to be dodgy connection on the plug behind the dash [8|]
