Oil?

Just covered 1900 miles and the oil needed a top up. Does this seem excessive oil use or is this normal for a Porsche?
 
Certainly not compared to mine..

Kaz, new engines will use more oil than usual as the moving parts bed in..
Keep your eye on it a bit more than usual, but nothing to worry about unless it does get excessive.

Porsche claim that anything better than one litre per thousand kilometres is in spec!

BTW take care not to overfill. Add no more tha 0.2 litres at any one time, in fact it's best to wait for the gauge to drop 2 bars before adding any

So even if your gauge instantly dropped 1 bar, 200ml should top it up and this equates to 4,500 miles/litre, which is about what I'm getting after 9000 miles.

I guess so. Does consumption increase if the engine is run harder? I haven't been pussying around but I did run it in carefully and it hasn't had any long fast runs or track use.

I remember reading somewhere (possibly the handbook) an explanation why oil consumption appears to increase dramatically during long/hard driving. Apparently condensation occurs in the engine during short runs, this condensation is then absorbed by the oil and so masks any drop in oil level. During a subsequent prolonged high temperature engine operation the moisture in the oil is driven off revealing the true oil level. Thus several months worth of oil consumption might be revealed for the first time after an hour or so of high temperature operation.
 
That makes some sense but I doubt if it would affect my case. I never start the car unless it is going to run at least until both the water and oil are fully up to temperature. Typically it will run for several miles after that point.

My experience so far also shows that the oil gets hotter, according to the gauge, running slowly in traffic than when running quickly, so as long as it isn't subject to very short, cold runs I would not expect internal condensation to be an issue, for me at least.

I suppose that on a track, where more high rev, lower gear work would be likely, this is probably not the case and the oil will get much hotter. What sort of oil temperatures are reached on a typical track day?

Sorry can't help - never put mine on the track, although I did see it reach about 110C in the summer while driving on a French motorway.

Sounds OK to me.

I found that the motor sipped a bit of oil for the first 2/300miles and then used hardly any at all.

Mine was pretty consistent, using about half a bottle, every thousand miles or so, right up to 23k miles.
