just a quick post, the old girl has been in my friends body shop it all started with an mot failiure with a bit of welding needed, popped to my mates he got grinding spoke to him 4 days later "hows it going" i asked "still grinding" he replied. Well 2 months later, new inner outer sills b pillers, sections of wing fabricated, outer floor skins either side, torsion bar covers, jacking points, covers, in fact 20 years of bodging rectified the car was so bad i nearly broke her but i couldnt do it... i would rather be homeless. so 3k+ later she is ready on monday for the mot so i have teated her to some 15/50 pro r silkoline from a nice helpful chap called Guy at opie oil (see thread on oil section) quite expensive but a change every 10k makes it better value i will let you all know how it goes.
has anyone used this oil? whats it like? etc etc

so next week she will be back again... like a returning family member whos been ill, sadly my partner does not share the same heartache and enthusiasim as i do.

she did say "you love that car more than me"

I declined to comment....
 
There's a guy who posts in the R10 forum who has an excellent signature. Something like

My wife says she'll leave me if I don't give up motorsport.

Shame. I'm gong to miss her

well just having been at the old girls bedside for two months...subject to mot and road tests i should be there. I will ring stuart at R12 to get details (hes been very supportive with my cars illness)

Oh the ex member bit i will get that sorted next week
 
opie oils eh .......... that'll be the nice internet HIGH PRESURE TERROR SALES PEOPLE , they will tell you the only oils for your car are the ones they can supply ..... you'd be surprised how many forums have kicked them into touch .

on the other hand the silkolene oils i have used in the past have been excellent .
 
I always used the old faithful Castrol GTX in my SC.

Mobil1 or Castrol Edge Synthetics were considered too thin for the older engine and would often 'create' leaks where the GTX was thick enough to stay where you wanted it.

This was a few years ago though and current thinking might say otherwise.
 
A reasonable quality old-school oil. Castrol GTX type stuff, I think. No doubt someone can recommend something specific What you don't want is modern expensive synthetic oils. It may seem like a "treat" for the car, but it's not. These oils weren't around 30 years ago and the engines were not designed to use them.
 
Interesting point you make about modern fuels. I used to think the same, but ever since I started using Castrol Magnatec 10w/40 I found that the engine runs much smoother and any leaks which used to drip, have ceased.

It is much more expensive - approx £6 pe litre - but I do think that the oil is undoubtedly the most important element of a regular service, and keeps the engine young and clean - at least that's what my wife keeps telling me with her face creams - so what's good for her must be good for my car!!
 
I take back what I said on my earlier post. Having religiously used Castrol Magnatec, and thinking it was the bees knees, I recently took my SC to a different Independent Porsche mechanic for a service. He questioned why I was not using the type of oil which was originally intended for the engine , namely SINGLE GRADE HD30.
The result was amazing - I have never known the engine run so smoothly - and all he did was change the oil.
The only draw back being a single grade, is that it is not suitable for freezing winter temperatures - but then my SC doesn't like going out in the cold in any case.

Much cheaper too - but not easy to find it as it is not sold at local garages or Halfords.

As a result, I've become single grade convert!
 
No - actually there wasn't - I needed an MOT and new brake pipes and left it just too late to do myself before a 400 mile trip on a boy's car rally to the Cardigan Classic Car show. Nothing else was adjusted - well not to my knowledge anyway.
Incidentally out of 300 cars at the show, mine was the only Porsche - not much of a classic car show!
