Oily plugs on an S2

Just taken the spark plugs out on my S2, and there was rather a lot of oil on them... This looks like clean oil running down, so I suspect it had been collecting in the spark plug tunnels... is this common on an S2? Do I assume it is the cam cover gasket, or is there some other common cause? I guess this will give me an excuse to take a look at the camshafts and tensioner/slipper.

Thanks for any advice,

Tref.

I haven't heard that one before so I don't think it's common [&:] I totally agree with your diagnosis where it's coming from though. I seem to remember Martyn C had problems with the seals around all the bolts that hold the cam cover down and had to replace them all due to some leakage after an inspection

If it wasn't you that last changed the plugs and all 4 had the oil, I would suspect that when the plugs were last changed, a squirt of oil was put down each spark plug tunnel. This is often done to help prevent plug seizure.

There are oil seals about halfway down the spark plug wells, part no 928.104.443.08. Quid or so each from euro car parts. These are not part of the cam cover gasket (928.104.447.09 now I've found the right page in the parts diagrams) but you might as well do the cover gasket while you're there as you'll have to take the cam cover off.

One of mine had hardened and split into three pieces. There was oil pushing out from around the seal where the plug lead goes into the cam cover. Didn't even cause a misfire...

Hi Guys and I know this might be a million mile away. But while watching the Garage on tv recently (sorry) the guy brought in a Ferrari that sounded rubbish when the guys took the plugs out they were all oiled up. He then commented that this was a very common problem for people who keep their cars in store and just turn them over and let them run for a while to keep the battery charged and oil around the engine and that it was better to take the car out for a run. So change the plugs and hopefully job sorted.
cheers
Greg

p.s of course your now going to tell me you drive it all the time and blow away everthing i just typed.LOL[&:]

The chances of all 4 seals failing and leaking the same amount of oil down each plug tunnel is very small. I suspect the oil was put there intentionally. However if you're taking the cam cover off anyway, no harm in replacing the seals.
