Apologies if this has been aired in the recent past, but has anyone had a good experience with renewing their classic car insurance cover recently?

I've been very happy with the cover and premium I've had with Footman James over the last 2-3 years, but the renewal premium quoted to me this year has jumped by a couple of hundred pounds to GBP673!!

My C2 Targa is a 1993 model with no mods. I have a full no claims bonus, and have a mileage limit of 3,000 miles p.a.. Cover is fully comprehensive, with an agreed valuation of GBP16,000. The Footman James policy (underwritten by Royal and SunAlliance) has some very useful features including Legal Protection cover, up to 35 days European travel included, European Breakdown and Accident Emergency Assistance (great peace of mind on the annual Le Mans trip!), and Personal Accident cover.

I'm a 48yr-old, married man, living in Surrey. The car is garaged.

Thanks if anyone is able to help, as I suspect there's a better deal somewhere, if you can track it down!!

Cheers,

Paul

That's more than I pay for my 2011 Turbo 'S with 10k miles pa. '! [:(]

Try Porsche Insurance, administered by Marsh Brokers as they seem to be competitive currently.

I'm flummoxed by insurance nowadays and tend to go the market annually for both my house and vehicle cover.

Good luck.

I recently looked to move from classic insurance to a policy that included track days. I assumed this new premium would be much more expensive but it wasn't. The old policy was with Hagerty (and I would still recommend them) and the new one is with competition car insurance. Upon moving I lost breakdown assistance and gained track days. Old was about £350 and the new about £400. I'm 44, live in Herts, have one claim 4 years ago and a 964 C2 (modified suspension). I was able to carry full NCD from my company car. Hope this helps.

Try Classic Line - I've had my 968 with them for a few years now. £100 Xs is a big plus, agreed value, option to take 75% value plus the wreck if you total it, or full value and they get the wreck. Track days are not included per se, but if organised by a proper car club (eg PCGB) they will cover at no additional cost, just ups the Xs to £1k. Other track days are IIRC £50 per day.

plus one with classic line beat hagerty by 100 pounds been with hagerty for 2years then zap 100 pound dearer

I'd also suggest that you try Cherished Vehicle Insurance (0845 077 3082). I have my 964 with them as a classic car policy with an agreed value and a restricted mileage of 3000. I was delighted with their quote. I believe they specialise in Porsche cars, so know what's what.

Same here, Hagerty basically told me they weren't going to insure old cars anymore, I seem to remember. I think there was a few posts in a thread a couple of years ago on it.

Now I'm with Classicline & my insurance has never been better value.

1st year Heritage - OK, but renewal quote was +£100
2nd year Hagerty via Mayfair - never again!!! Took 3 months and intervention of their FSA rep to get documentation sorted. []
3rd year Classic line. Better price and perfect documentation
4th - just got renewal from classicline - only gone up 60p!

Paying just under £300 for 3000 miles, mid 40's, garaged with legal protection and UK breakdown included for free

Many thanks for your replies, which were really helpful.

I've been quoted GBP 280 by Classic Line (Underwriter - Brit Insurance). Cover is broadly the same as my Footman James policy, though European Breakdown cover is an extra, and will need to be arranged and paid for on a trip-by-trip basis. To be honest, I haven't really called anyone else, as to do so seems a bit churlish when the saving is nearly 400 quid!!

However, before I go ahead, I'm wondering whether anyone has had any experience of actually claiming under their Classic line policy (or any of the other recommended options)?

Sorry to cause any nightmares, but the last thing you want to happen if your 'pride-and-joy' has a dent is to encounter some hassle with the insurance claim!!

After getting the Classic Line quote, I had to call Footman James to see if there'd been a mistake with my renewal quote. Seems, however, their underwriters just aren't interested in this business anymore.

Thanks again!

I seem to have done okay with Hagerty.

Both my 964 and my 1994 G wagon at a little over £400 for both with an agreed value of £25k and £15k.....

Usual 3000 miles and garaged overnight a requirement.

A happy ending!

I added annual European breakdown cover to the original quote at a cost of £55, and today arranged cover with ClassicLine, on the same basis as my old policy, for a premium of £335 (or as near as dammit half the cost of the renewal premium quoted by Footman James).

I should add that the process with ClassicLine has been very smooth. Straightforward and friendly contacts on the phone, plus they have downloadable forms to help with confirming an agreed valuation (just need my usual independent to sign, which I quickly confirmed by phone before placing cover), and the current mileage.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

Paul

I'm currently with Hagert and am ready to renew at the begining of July.
The quote has not gone up, but is £361.
I have just read through and taken your advice to ring classicline.

36 year old living in South Yorks / garaged over night.
Increased my milage from 1500 to 3000 and my excess from 100 to 150. 75 windscreen and free legal and uk recovery. £256 or £271 for direct debit.

CLASSIC LINE - WELL WORTH A PHONE CALL

A Manning....

What he said. Very interesting is that their underwriter is Zurich - the same as Hagerty. So what's your problem Hagerty? Word has it that they insure cars that are valued at millions of pounds each and the owners started to complain to the directors of Hagerty that the losses incurred by the cheap cars was affecting their premiums. So Hagerty went snobby. How true this is I don't know but I've heard it from 2 people in the classic car world.

High value cars need a tracker with Manning - the only downside to an RS!
