Ominous clunking noises

I am getting strange deep sounding intermittent clunking noises from near the back of my Lux.

I had the gear box profesionally reconditioned just before Christmas and have done all the brake pads and disks just recently.

All seemed to be fine. Nothing is obvious, everything is in position and hasn't moved.

Any ideas?

PS Also adjusted the handbrake recently, it now works the best it's ever been and I feel like I can trust it for the first time ever

Or battery or anything else in rear wells. Could also be CV joints but these would tend to give a more regular clunking.

Is it just after being parked up, or does it happen 10 minutes after you've been driving.

I am trying to source the noise i am getting from the rear too, but it only happends once i have parked up with the handbrake on, then reverse - it's like there is something hollow/rattle happening when the car moves backwards in reverse, then when you drive off it's still there but goes away after 30-40mph and doesn't come back if you slow down. I am thnking it's handbrake related, but also possibly ther rear calipers sticking. More inclined to go with the handbrake shoes theory for my car, as it is a loud grating holow sound which gets slightly louder and quieter as the wheels turn as speed picks up.

Is that similar at all helen ?

I'm thinking CV joints as well. Another thing to check is the anti roll bar mounts, has one of them rusted through causing some movement?

Does the clunking happen when you are coming off or going on the power? Does it happen in a straight line or when cornering? Left or right?

Just thought of an obvious thing (which I did a few weeks ago). Are the wheel nuts fully tightened []

It happens when I set off, when I slow down to join a queue, when I'm going slowly, when I'm going fast . . .

It's not something loose in the back (pity as that would have been a doddle), the wheel nuts are tight (luckily).

I don't know about reverse, as I always park so I can drive forwards out of the space/garage, so don't reverse far at all.

At first it only happened at lower speeds, but now also happens when going faster (60-70mph).

I think it's the cv joints so I'll get my mechanic to have a look.

Thanks for all your help.

I had bits of the off side hand brake mechanism fail which gave intermttent 'mini bangs' on take off, and later at anytime. it was booked in to be investigated when it failed completely tearing everything in the drum to shrapnel. It got me home, but the entire mechanism, shoes and cable needed to be replaced. No lockup occured but the noise was distressing, especially as I was on a tarred 'goat track' at night miles from anywhere. Leaving the car abondoned there would have most certainy resulted in a combine harvestor flattening it. It escapes me as to which bit failed first tho....
