On the road again.............

Just thought I`d mention that what with work, weather etc I garaged the old girl last November.

Recharged the battery having already taken it out (then had to get the tailgate open....dohhh) and she started straight away first turn (tappets noisy for a few secs) so I warmed her up, no issues and an hour later got her MOT`d with an advisory front o/s wheelbearing play possibly is slightly more than it should be and a rear number plate lamp u/s................superb, chuffed and then gave her a damn good spanking (a gentle spanking IYKWIM) and realised again why I love to drive her and even with another project on the go I must drive her more.

BTW the only problem that seems apparent is the a/c knob wont get the air warm unless I turn on the full defrost/demist button but then the temp control knob wont turn the heat down as it then comes out full heat............................why?

Its the graduated type (climate control)................any ideas?

Paul,

Good to hear you're driving her again. I'd started to worry that you were becoming too occupied by your stripped out Golf play things. Lots of fun i'm sure, but a completely different animal to the 944. I'm sure there is room enough in your life for both!

These climate control things are a bit odd sometimes. I sometimes find that if I say set it to 25 degs i'll get cool air coming out and I have to turn it upto fully hot to get hot air out. But on other days at the same setting i'll get warm air coming out. I think that it is the climate control working in that the system senses you are already at or close to the set temp so cools the air at the same knob setting so it doesn't overshoot the target temperature. I think with climate control you just need to set the system and let it do its stuff.

Sounds like your windscreen demist button is working OK though. When you press that it turns the fan speed to full, despite what setting it is actually at, turns the temp upto full, again, despite what setting the temp knob is at, and deflects all the air to the windscreen.

Yes, she is sulking because you have ignored her for the last 3 months - drive it more![;)][:D]

Good to see you got her back where she belongs...!

This is getting me fired up for the end of next month when I will be back in action again....!

I always feel really guilty about the winter layoff..... And as Nick says she does sulk for a while.. Like a girlfriend that you have been ignoring for a few weeks then contact again......She will have a big lip for a while but soon comes round[:D][:D][:D]

I love driving my car in all weather conditions. I went skiing the other week and left her at Stansted airport car park right through the snow. Came back after 5 days and the car was completely covered in snow which had iced over rock hard. Times like this you realise that leaving your ice scraper in your car is a really silly idea!! Anyway I discovered that my PCGB membership card makes a very effective ice scraper (the guys at PCGB think of everything!) and after a good 20mins of clearing snow and ice off my car and carefully opening the door so as not to tear stuck door seals I climbed in, said a small prayer to the god of Porsches and turned the key. After a few laboured turns of the engine she sprung into life. Amazing. Took the driver out of the car park very gingerly as it was an ice rink, but she performed perfectly. I even had a laugh at a guy in a brand new A5 struggling to get up an incline as I pulled around him and drove past without a care in the world.

Got her out onto the open and cleared highway, I had the roads to myself, and opened her up and cruised all the way home as some mph [8|]. She was an absolute pleasure to drive. My only complaints were that my lights are rubbish on unlit roads and my washer jet nozzles had frozen over and didn't unfreeze at all for the whole journey. Not bad for a 22yr old car.

Didn't get mine out in the snow this year but have enjoyed it in the past it is a bit comical how the rears just spin up when any boost builds, surprising traction off boost though considering size of the rear tyres (255) - Its a lot more predictable and controllable than the volvo 940 I did drive in the snow this year,

ps front wheel bearings are easy to adjust and seem to degrade quickly if you dont

Think Paul (Diver944) had the same temp issue when the outside temp sensor failed on his car.

Tony

Yep Tony has a good memory. When this sensor fails, the system thinks it's very hot outside so won't blend in any hot air from the engine unless you overide it by pressing the full defrost/demist button. The sensor was a few quid from an OPC and is the 2 inch black plastic probe under the plastic cover at the back of the engine bay. Here's a pic I took (from 03/03/2003 according to it's details - yawn [8|] )

Hi Scott

Actually I`ve not been able to spend a lot of time on the Golf (not as much as I`d have liked but it is now about to go for an MOT and with a pass I`ll slip on a new set of boots and see how it goes at Bedford Autodrome. The 944T is a definite bonus as I am now lucky enough to have a car to work on and thrash the bejasus out of and the Porsche as a hobby car.

By the way I cannot recommend highly enough the road (s) from Shrewsbury to Machynlleth, Powys via Welshpool. Spent a weekend in central Wales and wished I`d taken the Porsche, great winding roads, little traffic and overtaking opportunities aplenty if there is. Only issue was I was in the Landcruiser [&o]

Thats exactly it but I never knew it was designed to direct hot air at max temp, I assumed it would deliver at the selected temp.

Here's a pic I took (from 03/03/2003 according to it's details - yawn [8|] )

Thanks Paul [:)]

I seem to recall they are a Mercedes like construction with a `C` nut and allen key???

If so what is the criteria? Adjust until all play is gone? A bit?

Any advice welcome, thanks.

Yep 'C' nut with allen key under the cover in centre of hub, the manual is a little vague something along the lines of tighten it until you can just move the washer with a screwdriver without leverage, so tightish but not too tight and you should lose the play felt in the wheel. Clarkes may have an alternate procedure.l
