Only a few things left to get my car working as it should but how??

Just need to fix the intermittent and auto return on the wipers, any ideas what will be wrong? I'm guessing a relay but which one?

Then need to fit a new bulb on the clock, how do the dials come out?

Also wondering are the little door handle plastic inserts available seperately? I need 2 new ones as there are cracks in them.

And finally the 3rd postion on the heater doesn't work unless you push it past the notch and hold it. Is there an easy fix and how the heck does that come out?

Today i've fixed the drivers window mechanism, the heated rear window and sorted out a patch of rust. Also done the 3 stage maguires clean and polish and she is looking beautiful!!! [:)]

Any help really appreciated, cheers folks.

If the wipers don't self park it is likely that the wiper relay is missing, most likely taken out because of erratic and random operation of the intermittent wipe. The contacts in the column stalk gradually bend due to use of the screen washers, and get to the point were the slightest bump can separate them and initiate the intermittent wipe. If you have the three dial dashboard ( '83? I guess it would be then ) the removal of the console gauges is straigtforward if you know the wrinkles.

The knobs & levers for the heater simply pull out. Somewhere underneath the panel there are two scews hidden from view in normal circumstances. Remove these and pull the lower part of the panel free. The rotary switch control clips in from behind its panel. Once everything is out of the way, and I am working from memory of my 924 here, which has the same layout, remove the two scews from the top corners of the console and pull it forward. The bottom edge may need easing from where it sort of clips into the cross meber of the cntre console. Be careful with the illumination bulb and the handbrake warning light.

Normally its the motor that sets the return position, this is true I know of the rear as I took one apart, I guess the front is the same ?.
You often see the door bits on ebay for about 99p so have a look

For the clock etc take a look at Clarks Technical Manual here, it has good info on most 944/968 jobs !

The clock dials are an easy job. Remove the two very small screws that are mounted vertically upwards in the bottom lip (near the edges). Id i can find a diagrammatic picture will email it to you.
Cheers,

You are right the motor sets the position, by being fed from a separate supply when the switch is opened. Fundamentally and without a long drwan out description, the feed to the self park circuit goes through the intermittent wipe relay so that the motor is enabled for about four wipes by an internal timer when the screen wash is operated, before self parking. No relay no park because you have lost the feed to the self parking circuit only. When my intermittent action drove me nuts on a long journey I pulled the relay out, top row second in on the 924 I believe. Then when it did rain the wipers wouldn't self park. I put the relay back in and hey presto!

Cheers for the info there. I'll have a better look when its light again in the morning. I saw the two screws at the top but couldn't see anymore. It appeared the whole consol wanted to come loose once i removed them.

The lower heat slide/selector pulls out with ease but the other 2 appear stuck pretty well.

I gather the knob on the heater just pulls out too. [:D] ooh err. I've seen a pic of it behind and it appears a complete switch with wires from the rear. Guess i need a new unit to make the 3rd position work?

That clarkes site is a great reference point. Thanks Ian
