OPC could not install instrument cluster

C4S al

New member
Hi,

Following on from an earlier thread, I purchased a silver dial instrument cluster for my 996 C4S.

I took it to a local OPC. They installed the cluster initially, however the milage from my old cluster could not be placed into the silver dial one. The silver dial one had been taken from a vehical and was reading circa 3,400 miles. Consequently the only option I had was to have the silver dial put in place reading 3,400 miles and my log book stamped with the old milage.

I was a little concerned about that as things like this can hit resale. People thinking clocked car etc.

I chatted with the tech guy for some time and he showed me how the test unit would not sync my milage into the silver cluster unit. He could not manually write the old milage in.

If it was a new cluster then the info is placed in and this process I was told can only be done once. So if I bought a new unit from Porsche, I would have the invoice, my true milage goes in and all is well. No dispute if someone was to question any cluster change.

I do not want to have the potential for losing monies when it comes to selling.

Has any one actually taken a used cluster to an OPC and got it installed and reset???

I can understand the OPC having strict processes as people internally could be clocking cars etc.as was suggested to me.

Any thoughts appreciated. Frustrated as I have this silver dial cluster that works and did look good in my car sitting back in a box.

Regards Alan.

Oh, dear. As per my email last Saturday, it isn't possible to adjust the mileage with a PST2 when fitting a used cluster. It can only be done on a brand new, unused, cluster.

You are a bit snookered now, having had the book stamped. Otherwise you could have found a "mileage correction" company. (Google "Mileage Correction" - it will shock you!)

Edit: After another email from Alan, I realise I had got the wrong end of the stick, and that he didn't go ahead with the swap, the service book wasn't stamped, so that's a relief.

Once a cluster has 62 or more miles on it it is locked and a PST2/PIWIS cannot change it. But aftermarket companies can.

Richard,

Probably a silly question but would it be possible to remove the electronics from the exisiting cluster shell and fit into the new cluster shell with the silver dials?

Regards,

Hi,

I was pondering the changing the silver dials bit to the original cluster electrics but not sure how tricky it could be.

The OPC were very helpful. They are still happy to do the transplant if I can sort out the dials either by correct mileage or silver insert change over.

This way I negate the log book getting stamped with a previous mileage and a silver set with s silly low mileage on it and all the assumptions that go with it.

Any help appreciated if there is any other option. The chap I bought it off clearly stating it was a new cluster has not replied to my email so probably stuck with this and have to ponder a solution.

Regards Alan.

You take both clusters apart and swap the dial assembly. That way the silver dials will be in your original cluster. It is not hard to take a cluster apart if you are handy. If not then ask a speedometer shop to do it.

The other way, as I said, is to have the mileage changed in the "new" cluster to match your original cluster. As I said, an OPC cannot do this with their equipment. Aftermarket companies can change the mileage. A speedometer shop that deals with electronic clusters may have the equipment to do it.

If anyone has a spare face for an instrument cluster I would be interested as mine has a crack in the speedo done by Mr Nobody when it was valeted. I need the one for the tip though as I bought the one without the 3 curved displays at the bottom and when I dismantled it realised these are moulded into the glass.
Thanks
