OPC Discounts

What discounts are you getting from your local OPC on parts and labour rates?

Trying to find out if it is the same or are some Dealers being a lot more generous to PCGB Members?

I'll start with mine

OPC Kendal : Labour 10% (if you ask loudly) Parts between 7.5% - 10% depending on the parts ordered

The parts dept manager at Wilmslow offered me 10% off parts without me asking. I am not a PCGB member but when I told him it was a restoration job, he said they were keen to support keeping the older cars on the road.

I think it's very variable, as the individual PCs aren't obliged to offer any discounts to CLub members or anyone else.

As it's completely discretionary, it's worth speaking to the Region about their relationship with the PC, they are possibly able to exert some influence if members aren't getting a better deal, and buying elsewhere if you are after parts. Glenn at Leicester PC is a 944 enthusiast, and I think you'll get as good a deal from him as anywhere.

I'd prefer some consistency, but all the PCs are individually-owned private businesses, so can set their own discounts at will.

That is the reason for asking Paul. Kendal is 55 miles away from me so unless it is a very bulky item I get it posted to me.

If Glenn or another OPC can do me better prices then I will gladly give them my custom. In the last month I have given Kendal over £3000 for parts and 3rd party warranty work (paid for by me upfront then claimed back) and feel like I am a beggar for asking for discounts [:(]

I get 10% from PC Leicester, used to be similar from Exeter. Free postage for small stuff. I'm not a PCGB member but they are happy to discount to "forum" members

Glenn is a very helpful chap

I'm still under £1k on (new) parts for the 944 and Boxster in the last year, ...plus a s/h engine

Belfast will give similar Martin, if pushed gently, and reminded if necessary that an OPC in England often give more.

They are helpful too.

Its a subject best left to local negotiation and the free market, as a flat rule applied across the board would likely be "5% thats it"

Martin, you've paid for your own snacks and drinks at the Kendal OPC Macaan launch, no such thing as a free meal ...[:D]

Went to Hatfield a few weeks ago and asked for a quote for various small/random parts. The invoice total was around £700 IIRC. Was offered 5% discount only. Felt that was pretty poor. I mentioned I'm a PCGB member and was told that's the best they could do.

Needless to say I didn't buy as I know plenty of people have mentioned in the past about Glenn offering 10% most of the time.

I think OPC's can look at the profit margin on items as they sell them and hence tailor their discount accordingly. I don't know how much discount I get form my OPC but I'm fairly well known in there and always ask for a discount, and sometimes there is a nice big one and other times a small one, as they look at a screen, with the comment "Sorry, that's all we can do on that item."

Oli.

The discount varies between 10% or 17% depending upon what it is. 10% is often their margin!

OPC Glasgow give me 10% at least and some times a bit more.I wouldn't go past them for parts. Both parts guys are really helpful also the dealer principle like to restore older cars. He has a 912 done and a 914 and 930 in process.

What about labour rates? Are any of you being offered more than 10% discount?

I heard that Newcastle were offering upto 50% [:-]

Yup, £60 +vat was the figure being touted about from Newcastle a while back but a new guy came in and said he'd be reviewing it, I don't know what the upshot of that was though.

I can find out next Weds for you if you like?

Please Dave, as if it is correct then it is quicker for me to go to Newcastle rather than Hartech in Bolton or OPC Kendal [:)]

Or I can point you in the direction of an Indy 2mins from Porsche Newcastle who'll be even cheaper ;)

+1 for the Glasgow parts guys - very helpful and have just given me 20% off a brake caliper for a 993, still expensive though!

At Risk of stating the obvious, dont forget Euro car Parts.
Remember aside from Body Shell pressings, Porsche dont make components, they just either assemble or resell them for maximum profit, all those free coffees have to be funded [:)].
Bosch, Mahle, Lobro, Michelin are the manufacturers. Their engineers are the brains that achieve component performance - Porsche's bean-gineers are responsible for squeezing every last drop of cost and if necessary performance out of each component to produce a 991 for less than a Golf. Look at the con-rods in a new GT3 for proof. What has happened to the bullet-proof engineering standards we once held in such high regard? [:(]
