OPC or Specialist - will it affect trade in value?

Hi All,

After a good experience with a Specialist, am now considering going with them to have the servicing done instead of Porsche.
They are quoting half the cost of annual service compared to OPC.

My book is stamped with OPC services but the car is coming to 68k miles. Will the saving I make from getting a specialist to service be taken off from trade in when I come to sell?
I know private sellers prefer full OPC but how about trade-in. Will a specialist service give dealers an excuse to knock more off your car at trade in?

Any advice appreciated.
Cheers.

Dan,

I also have a 2.5L boxster the same age and mileage. My last (major) service was done by an independent and I strongly believe more was done for a lot less money. Independents can also stamp your book (theres been a change of law recently providing they use Porsche parts I think). They also tend to be ex-Porsche anyway.

w.r.t. trade-in, see other listings. The residuals on all older boxsters are evaporating, especially when the 987 became available. For the money I paid for my 986 2.5 ca. 2.5 years ago I could have had a 986 3.2S, perhaps even a bit younger.

Remember, e-bay is where older 986s go to die.

hope this helps.

Thanks Iain, thats extremely useful, I agree that boxster prices have taken a bit of a nose dive. Looks like 996 prices are being hit too.

Don't be daft 986's don't die they're just like dragons!

When a car matures and with that mileage OPC servicing is probably of little concern to a buyer as it's no longer in factory warranty.

Hi Dan,

I am in the same situation, however my Boxster is a '97 2.5! It still has full OPSH, and I am going to sell it after my forthcoming service. I have chosen to go to an OPC, as it's only an annual inspection the price difference will be smaller, and (it may be a minor selling point) having full OPC means the buyer can , get an inspection done and then choose to get a warranty if he/she so wishes. If I were you I wouldn't bother, I'd o to a spcialist instead.

Iain....anyone can stamp your book. The new European directive is that any trader can set themselves up to service Porsches and not invalidate the warrantee as long as they are approved as such by Porsche (ie they have to meet their stringent criteria)...as these criteria are so prohibitivly expensive, very few will ever in fact become Porsche approved service centres.
