Opening Older Boxsters roof whilst moving

We are trying to get a "bulk" order from Wilhelmy for the smarttops. There has been some posts on this before in the forum. Current cost is around £ 115 for Boxster (986) and £ 150 for 911 Cabrio (996). There are 5 interested parties - we need another 5 at least. List price Euro 199 (Boxster) and Euro 249 (911 Cabrio).

In short it allows the newer functionality of operting the roof whilst traveling up to 25 MPH and incorporates a "one touch" function. Smarttop seems to be better than other alternatives as it is a simple replacement taking 30 seconds to fit.

More details from www.smarttop.de

---------------------------------------------------
The smartTOP roof control unit allows opening or closing the convertible top while
driving at slow speeds. It works similar to a window lift and opens or closes the roof fully
automatic at the touch of a button. It is not necessary anymore to stop the vehicle and
pull the handbrake to operate the roof.

Operating the roof control while driving at slow speeds
max. 40km/h (25mph) with smartTOP 986 and smartTOP 996a, max. 50km/h (30mph) with smartTOP 996b

If you are interested please email the Region 21 organiser at martin.nelson@mansup.co.uk.

Hi Tim,
I'm up for it; say, have you guys checked if "bulk discount" only applies to the same model i.e. 10+ of smartTOP 986b - For Porsche Boxster newer than Model Year 2000, etc. How about P&P?

This is directly from R21 organisers email ...

On pages 21 and 133 of April's Porsche Post these controllers are advertised for £139 (Boxster) and £174 (996) plus about £14 postage and packing. However, if 10 or members buy them at the same time I have been quoted the discounted price of Euro 169 (about £116 for Boxster) and Euro 219 (about £150 for 996). We still have to pay Euro 20 (about £14) postage per address but if they are all delivered to my Cockfosters address we can share that cost and arrange collection or delivery.

Just need to get 10 people and I think we are 6 at the moment.

Is the roof mechanism able to handle the wind loading when travelling at up to 25mph?

How does the unit know how fast you are going?

Andrew

Don't forget you still need to stop halfway down on pre-2003 model cars to do the "chop".
I understand this unit allows this, but I have to remind you all...[8|]

Hi,

Most of the answers can be found on www.smarttop.de

1. Martin has the older 3 strut roof (like me) and the later version has 4 struts just to facilitate folding of rear window. Martin's unofficial view is that the wind will be deflected over the opening roof at under 30 mph.

2. As far as we can tell from the web site the unit deactivates itsself when the electronics say the car is doing 30 mph. However, if you start the auto-roof open at say 25 mph and then slam your right foot to the floor, the roof will continue to complete the open process regardless of your speed. There is a warning about this on the web site.

Can I ask that if you are interested in the offer (and we have the 10 now so we want to order soon ready for the summer !!!) that you email Martin (R21 Organiser) directly with your e-mail address, Name, Address, Contact Telephone Number and Control Unit Module you wish to buy. Martin's email is martin.nelson@mansup.co.uk.

Current price is Euro 169 (about £116 for Boxster) and Euro 219 (about £150 for 996). Postage is additional and we are trying to reduce that as normally it is around £14 to each address direct from Smartttop.

I'm just waiting for total price confirmation from Martin.

We now have over 10 members interested so if you want one of these please email martin.nelson@mansup.co.uk quickly. Payment will be made directly to PCGB who will look after the transaction.

Thanks to all those who responded.

Tim.
