Operating Temp & high rev issues

My 1985 944 has a couple of issues that I'd like to pick your brains on.

Operating temp, the needle is way up over 3/4 for a while before the fans seem to kick in and lower the temp. There is sometimes a rather strange smell through the vents when the fan kicks in too. Would a dodgy thermostat be allowing the car to get too hot before the fans kick in?

The second issue is how high the revs are at idle, any idea what would be causing a higher than normal idle?

Thanks!

The fans are controlled by a temp sensor that is independent of the thermostat. It is this sensor that determines when the fans come on. I notice my S2 initially "heats up" a bit before stabilizing but its not there for more than a few minutes. I also notice when returning from a jaunt that the fans are not always running at shut down - sometimes the fans continue to run for a short time after shut down but most often not. I would suggest you check the temp sensor first as if the thermostat was wonky then the fans would be starting and running early on.
High revs at idle are likely a vacuum leak allowing extra air into the system which results in higher rpm.

Bruce a vacuum leak at idle would generally see erratic idle speeds or hunting.
Agree with the fan diagnosis, temp sensor for fan control which is a PITA to get at.

Thanks guys, I'll check the temp sensor out, I was chatting to someone today who also suggested an air leak somewhere causing the higher than normal revs at tickover.
