Folks, I'd appreciate your views on these cars:

I have a hankering after a cheapish car that I can use on the odd track day but also drive on the roads. I used to have a 944 Turbo and would really like another, or similar style car.

I had thought about a race prepared 924 that I could also use in the CSCC Future Classics series but I can't really afford/ justify another race car & I don't want to mess about with trailers for track days & my Toyota race car is probably too noisy.

I have to sell a Ginetta G20 before I can afford anything so if anyone is interested in G20 race/ track day car then let me know.
 
That written off one is subject to a few threads on different forums. Back suspension is in 4x4 mode.
 
Interesting, thanks. Do you have any links & I'd be grateful if you could explain the 4x4 reference!
 
That first one has been for sale for quite some time and was the subject of threads on PH, 968uk and here. ISTR the concensus was "avoid". It looks like there's something wrong at the rear, like it's jacked up, hence that 4x4 comment. I believe the knowledgable spotted several other anomalies (is it Cat CorD, not sure whether that came off the PH or eBay ad).

Sounds like you want to keep the budget down which could be difficult for a decent 968. So, on the basis that you're looking for a cheapish Porsche for track fun, what about looking at high mileage boxster?

I'm sure I read somewhere thoughts it had been written off more than once. However, I think as you're saying and every ones point out on the other threads; just be cautious about it and view it on that basis. Ultimately you could end up with a very cheap 968 (but factor in the cost/time to get the rear re-indexed).

Or get a decent 944 for that money or as Steve says above a Boxster, even the S must be getting close to that money now.
 
Thanks for the advice guys. On the basis of the info about the black car I think I'll steer clear. It might be a very good buy & if it was in the Midlands rather than Scotland I might go & look at it & get EMC or PH Sportcars to give it the once over but I don't have the time to easyjet to Scotland on the basis that it "might" be a good car, when there is so much opinion that it probably isn't right. The Irish car is also to far away to take a chance on.

I had thought about a Boxster, but on the basis that I might go halves with someone to turn one into a race car for the BRSCC Porsche Boxster series and CSCC "Deutche Marques", & maybe I should think about that again. Although I'm not over keen on mid or rear engined cars (hence no Elise on my list and why I dismissed a Renault GTA idea I had briefly!).

Another possibility is an older 928! not a popular track car, I admit, but a pre 1981 car would be useful as, if it was stripped & fitted with a cage, it could get entries in to several pre1981 races but turning something into a true race car is a more expensive proposition than I want, and do want something that is useable on the road. Like the Boxster race car idea, that's a slightly different brief and building a race car always costs more than buying one already prepared!

Yet another option is.... now don't shout because I am a Porsche 944/968/928 fan, and former 944 owner,.....an Mazda RX-8! At least its front engined and water cooled! There are a lot about at reasonable money like this one: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2675992.htm
However, rotaries seem to have compression issues.

Maybe I'll pop down to PH Sportcars this afternoon & see what they have, the advantage of a 944/968 is that PH are on my door step. there's lots of knowledge of them, inc as track cars & I remain a Porsche fan.
 
I've heard that an RX8 makes a very poor track car (without spending lots of ££££ on it). Here are some thoughts from a PH thread:

If you went for a cheap Mazda I think you'd have a lot more fun in an MX5.
