Optional Equipment - Differential

Having had a 3.2 Carrera, 964 and 993 over the past 3 years (and really enjoyed all of them in their own different ways), I now somehow find myself in possession of a 996 - which I think is an improvement on all the others. The car is a '98 C2 manual and my question relates to the special equipment options. According to the decode it has a Locking Differential 40% (220) and an Automatic Limited Slip Differential (224). Am I reading it correctly and if so, isn't this a contradiction in terms? Not sure what the benefits (if any) are of this option and any explanation (preferably simple) would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation,

Martyn

Welcome to the "dark side"!

220 is good news, as you have a pukka limited slip diff. I think you'll find that 224 is the ABD (Automatic Brake Differential) which is part of the traction control system. Take a look at the "TC and PSM explained" thread in the FAQ section.

Thanks for the prompt reply Richard, much clearer now. The car has TC therefore the ABD makes sense. Just need to bone up on benefits of Limited Slip Diff now (acronym deliberately avoided!).

Cheers,

Martyn
