On my 944 I've checked the options codes on the label inside the boot and one of them is 424 - Automatic Heater Control. What exactly is that?
 
It's the heater with the numbers on the temp dial rather than the blue to red graduation. It maintains a constant temperature in the cabin by blending cold and warm air and measuring cabin temp via the little round hole with the slats over it by the clock.

It's standard on S2 and Turbo models and with the addition of air-con effectively makes a basic climate control system, otherwise it can only cool down to ambient.
 
Thanks for that - you also solved another query I had, what the round hole in the dash with the slats was!
