Options to upgrade from CDR23

Hi,

I am interested in changing the head unit in my 996, which is currently the default CDR-23. I also have the Bose sound upgrade, so I have a BOSE amp under the bonnet, and I believe it is an optical connection between the head unit and the amplifier, as the car is from 2003 it use MOST, which I believe limits my options.

What I was looking for was a 1 DIN unit with SAT Nav + Bluetooth + iPod and came across the Becker Cascade , which fits all my criteria, except it doesn't have an optical out.

Anybody have experience putting in a Becker Cascade into a 996? I searched the web I came across a converter from Audio Authority which can convert RCA to optical , but I'm not sure if it will work.

Suggestions welcomed.

I somehow doubt that it would work, but I really don't know to be honest. The fibre optic loop in the MOST system carries both audio channels in the same cable (amongst other information). That A/D converter looks to me as if it is a single channel only. Whether the data would be compatible is a bit of an unknown, and if you need two and they are 160 Euros each, it could be an expensive mistake.

I did this for the same reasons you suggest. I had a Becker Cascade 7944 + iPod fitted to my 996 C4S and it works very well. The navigation is good, handsfree phone quality excellent and iPod functions well. My car doesn't have the full Bose system, however, does have the optional Porsche Sound Package (which I think is produced by Bose anyway).

You are correct in thinking there is no optical out. The dealer I bought my car from used a local audio specialist to carry out the work and he advised that the only work around was to re wire and bypass the MOST Amp (still keeping in situ so can be reversed). I had the choice of fitting an aftermarket amp, however, having heard the head unit in a previous car with no amp decided this was not necessary.

The system works very well and the sound quality, depth and volume levels are all superb... sounds quadraphonic!

Hi James,

Thanks for the advice, this is encouraging. What year is your car? In the upgraded sound package did it come with a pair of sub woofers behind the rear seats? Did you root the ipod cable into the glove box?

Donal

Hi - mines a 2004 car not sure if it has woofers behind seats... will need to check - although think I would have noticed!

I've got an iPhone so had the cable routed to the centre console storage tray for ease of access. You can just about see the cable in the picture above.

Hi James/Donal, I have a Sept 2002 996 with a CDR23 and was also thinking what to do about satnav, mobile and Ipod connection. Having seen the Decker 7944 + Ipod I was very impressed and interested. I dont have the Bose upgrade or I think the sound package.

How much did the complete kit cost and was it readily available through your Porsche dealer or would it be best simply taking to an experienced audio specialist?

Thanks
Sean

Not cheap was the answer - IIRC I paid about £600 with iPod cable. There are a number of places on the web... suggest doing a google on Becker Cascade 7944 with iPod cable.
