Original Windscreen Internal Coating

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]The windscreen on my 964 is as original (unusually). The German language part names and manufacturer text visible. Trouble is that on attempting to clean the inside of the screen I noticed that there is some kind of 'plastised' coating on the glass - dig your fingernail in and it leaves a permanent mark/scratch. I'm now concerned in the best way of removing stains or dirt. I would normally want to auto glass cleaner or just a good old wash 'n wipe. The risk of this being permanent damage or smearing of this coating.

What is this coating and is it safe to use normal screen cleaners on this? I had thought of replacing it too as clearly there is permanent surface 'grinding' produced [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Cheers..

Marcus,

It sounds like you have an after market film on the inside of the screen. As far as I'm aware the only tint on a standard screen is the one built into the glass, with the option of a slightly darker top tint. I suspect you would be able to scrape it off but without being absolutely sure it's a bit of a risk. It's usually only the side and rear windows that have the film applied - but who knows what someone may have got up to before the law was tightened.

Regards

Dave

Indeed Dave. I wasn't sure if this was some kind of protective safety glass laminate or coating. I do know that when I tried a small rub of white spirit to remove old tax disc holder marks I ended up with a small smear mark. More head scratching and careful cleaning me thinks..

Marcus, might be worth getting in touch with a company that specialises in car window tint and see if they can advise or even safely remove the coating. There will be loads of companies out there i'm sure. Not having window tint, unfortunately i can't recommend any ;)

Not quite on topic but i have heard of an anti-chip coating that can protect the outside of a screen but
i cant find a retailer in the UK. Having just had a new windscreen due to a stonechip it seems a good idea.
