Out with the old....

....and in with the new!
Took my car in for it's annual service and MOT a few weeks ago and although there was no problem with the MOT, a few oil and brake hoses weren't looking so good so I thought it best to get them changed.
Unfortunately some of these required the exhaust to come off - can open, worms everywhere!
The resulting corrosion found on the original exhaust was enough to prompt me into action and get the long awaited stainless system fitted (no one said owning a Porsche was pain free!).
The pre-silencer and muffler showed up today so I went along to Parr to take a look.
The photo hints at the difference between how the car did look and how it's going to look - and now I can't wait for it to be fitted and I'm even glad of the corrosion on the old one!!!
Heat exchangers arrive tomorrow and I expect the car back next week, something I'm very much looking forward to driving and hearing!

Hello Shirish,

It's from cargraphic, (so is the pre-silencer, heat exchangers coming from Dansk) comes in either a 3.5inch or 4inch tail pipe for an extra 50 quid - so the one shown is the 4 inch!
Parr garage in Crawley sourced it for me so I'll let you know the exact price when the bill comes in.
They're avaliable on www.cargraphic.com for 795euro. (part No: CAR1SS85)

Have you heard what they exhaust sounds like?

Hi SP_CS

If you want to hear a really different exhaust note, you should listen to Gordon Wingrove's Club Sport. - It is the most "different" and appealing sound I have heard on a 3.2 in ages.

From my memory, it's an Autofarm back box, and it reminds me a little bit of a 2 stroke motorbike - very sharp "crack" as the exhaust pulse leaves the tailpipe

Nice

Shirish,

The TUV number (i.e. CAR1 or CAR2) I believe refers to either the single or double outlet mufflers, and the export I can only presume refers to the parts to be sent abroard.
I will find out from Parr and let you know when I speak to them next.
I don't think Parr are Cargraphic dealers as such they just offered to source some exhaust parts from me and I choose what I wanted. They did, of course, offer to fit any arts I could find myself. I will ask if they are dealers.
I have no idea what it's all going to sound like, but if anyone knows a way to post a sound clip I will post one when I get the car back? That said it's not like it sounded bad in the first place!

Steve, is there a big sound difference between the standard CS and the standard 3.2? (sorry, never heard a CS!)

FYI - most armchair experts and internet pundits would suggest that a standard shape pre-muffler (rather than a pre-muffler bypass pipe in your photo) is a better bet as torque is lost with the bypass pipe. The standard pre-muff is essentially a straight through design - so no restriction - that acts more like an expansion chamber and apparently the standard 3.2 makes its best hp and torque with this std design (if you stick with std exhaust rather than SSIs anyway).

Parr may tell you otherwise and the internet is not the most scientific arena, but I have heard this on Pelican so many times from reputable sources that I think it is at least worthwhile passing the info on to you. YMMV.

I also understand that Dansk are not full stainless ie., mild steel flanges and some of the bits you can't see etc. I may be wrong but as you are no doubt paying a lot of money its worth checking/asking the question.

IMHO you can't go past real SSIs for quality and bang for the buck on 3.2s (but then you probably didn't want to hear that or the rest of this post).

I'll get me coat...

Hi Richard,
The heat exchangers are full stainless - the only thing that's not going to be is the bolts - apparently standard practice but seems a bit odd to me, I'll be changing them for stainless bolts when I get the car back (picking it up thursday, very excited!)
I had originally intended an SSI system but unfortunbately time wouldn't allow as I need the car by the end of the week as I'm going away in it (hopefully I willnot regret this haste too much!), and as the dansk heat exchangers came at a very favourable price (and seeing as this was intended as a service the cost has mounted somewhat already!) I decided to go with them.
Definately the hardest thing about all this is living without the car for a bit!
Happy motoring!

Its quite a common misconception that stainless bolts are that much better that std items, what you will find with stainless is that it has a tendency to gaul up even when new, stainless on stainless is not great for this. Basically, this give a similar effect to a corroded fitting! Don't get too hung on using stainless especially where the fasteners have to be torqued to a decent figure. If you do insist on it, use plenty of anti-seize compound during assembly.

Cheers,

Thinking about it you're right, I just get all worried about galvanic corrosion - comes from working in a marine enviroment on ships. Not so much need to worry here, wasn't planning on getting the car submersed anyway!!
