Over wintering tips

Mr Toad

New member
Like some others here, I am now preparing my C4S for over wintering garage storage. I have bought a breathable cover and a battery charger/conditioner that automatically switches on and off as required to maintain the battery without removal from the car.

I was told there are specific battery connection points inside the cabin which means that the charger/conditioner does not have to be attached to the battery terminals. Can anyone explain where these points are as I'm not sure.

Any other tips will be much appreciated.

Thanks guys for all your help and support thus far in my new ownership of a 997.

Brian,

The thing to do is to join the Club as this allows you access to the members only technical section of 997 Register. There's an index there with links to a wealth of useful information for 997 owners.
It enables you to join in with some of events too.
Regards.

Clive.

Hi Brian,

The battery conditioner sold by Porsche has a cigarette lighter socket and this simply plugs in to on if the two cigarette lighter socket inside the car. The cable is left inside the door and send to be OK after shutting and locking the door. I generally use the drivers door for the cable aces so that I don't forget about is when driving out of my garage again.

The downside to using either the Cigarette Lighter or Battery Connection Points (In the drivers side foot well fuse panel) is that you still have to - for what of a better expression - shut the cable in the door.

I use a cable connected directly to the battery which I route out of the battery cover, up through the bonnet aperture where the windscreen wipers are. This means both the doors and bonnet are securely closed, and as I place the trailing cable over the drivers door mirror, I never forget to disconnect it before driving off. (there's a quick-disconnect cable splitter which I tuck down under the bonnet without needing to open it)

Thanks for the advice. As I am a member of the Club I'll check out their observations.

As to the routing of the battery charger/conditioner leads, I'm very much like Mr Toad and would probably set fire to the car and nearby surroundings if I attempted such a practice. I'm just at the level of plugging the charger/conditioner into the mains so I'll probably connect the other end (terminals) direct to the battery.

Thanks again.

Since you're already a member, I'll ask tscaptain to change your status.

Many of us use a C-tek smart charger, which I believe is similar to the Porsche unit but much cheaper on Amazon and Ebay.

The link for the battery charging thread is here http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=810548

BTW there is no problem feeding the cable through the door opening if you follow the advice in the link. [:)]

Regards,

Clive.

The Porsche charger is a CTEK item, just more expensive! Just drop the window a fraction and plug into ciggy lighter.

+1 from me, the CTEK is the one I use through the Cig lighter - works perfectly.

I also put one of the larger sachet type dehumidifiers in the car just to stop it getting musty inside - works really well

There are some useful tips in this month's Porsche Post, including increasing tyre pressures to reduce flat spots. Repositioning the car periodically also helps. Using nitrogen in the tyres maintains the pressure for a longer period. Wrap the windscreen wipers in cling film to preserve the blades.
