overfilled oil

midlife

New member
OK, my car was serviced recently and I think it has been over filled with oil. The oil indicator shows it is over the MAX mark and the dip stick also shows the same.

Any one know what the implications are of this? Is there an overflow? Is the only way to recitfy this to take the plug out and drain out the excess?

Mine was like that when I collected and after a recent top-up, its like that again now. No problems for me.

We had this on our Legacy, when someone who will remain nameless (coz she's otherwise great [:D]) topped it up with a whole 5-litre can. [&o]

I called the garage, they were very insistant that an overfill could do serious damage. As they were not going to be getting any work out of it, what was the reason for draining the excess off? [8|]

So what do I do, drain or ignore? Spent most of my days doing the latter, tempted to continue in that vein. Anyone have good reason to say otheriwise???

Cheers

If it's only a small overfill then no problem.
If it is a big overfill ,then too much oil can causes oil churning . Which can create air bubbles that loads the oil pump and cause it to fail.
Also high oil levels put more load on the crank and again can cause damage.
Another issue is it could cause higher than normal Crankcase pressure and may blow oil seals and more oil may get blown past rings etc
So if you think it is a large overfill get back on to the service centre and have them check it and if they say its fine get it in writing
