Overfilled with oil?

Following on from my previous post http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=762503

I committed the cardinal sin of taking my beloved to a non OPC or specialist last week to do a minor bit of paint and to change the oil / filter as its been laid up for over a year. I thought they cant mess that up. #FAIL

I have checked the oil level on the dash after engine has been driven and standing for the right time and the electronic indicator is at the very maximum showable.

Two questions

- Can I tell how over-filled it might be manually?
- Overfilling can be a problem I would imagine, but HOW MUCH OVER is a problem and what are the consequences?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

If the oil level is showing as maximum, you should be ok as that indicates it is (just) within the permissbale range. In most cases, I suspect a slightly over filled engine will just burn off the excess oil. If it was very full and you were unlucky, it can cause damage to the engine if it draws oil into the cylinder. This is why they suggest not driving the car if over filled.

It would be worth taking the car to a competent specialist to verify this, drain a little oil and then top it up to the correct level. And avoid bodyshops for general maintenance or top up the oil yourself.

Hope the car is ok.

Mine has a dipstick, when full the indicator on the dash shows full too.
I don't think you need a competent specialist to use a dipstick?

Hi guys,

thanks for the replies.... Will check the dipstick. I cant find my manual - should this be checked when cold or hot? (I know most cars when cold but hey, this 'aint!)

cold or when the countdown timer has finished if hot, but it can take a long time if your waiting there with your rag ready to dip.

Just to reassure you. I had my car serviced at an OPC and they over filled it also. I had a couple of occassions with a msasive smoke cloud, but no lasting damage ( I hope), and they gave a £100 doscount on any further work I had done there. Muppets.

So it can happen anywhere.

My PC recommend that the oil should not be topped up to the point where the electronic gauge is fully illuminated - they say that if this happens then you can expect smoke from the exhaust, especially if it's been standing a few days/weeks.

My OPC usually fills 8,5l of the 9 maximum, because you have to wait a week to drain every single drop out of the crankcase I think.

Yes, the electronic indicator is at the max and the dipstick is overfilled - not massively.

I will be using it this evening and see what happens smoke-wise.

Thanks for your input guys!

Ace Cafe tonight?
