Overheating

Can anyone help me? My left rear wing is getting very hot and yesterday after a hard drive i was sat idle for 5-10 mins and smoke started to appear around the left wheel and i couldn't touch the wing above as it was so hot.
I have recently cleaned out the drip trays and the car doesn't leak much so i doubt it was from an oil spill and the heat is clearly the big issue as there is no way out should be getting that hot.

Any thoughts much appreciated

Thanks
chris

How high was the oil temp on the gauge ? Perhaps the oil cooler fan not coming on. Usually runs by the time gauge reaches nine o'clock position.

Thats good then.

As I am sure you know - smoke from wheel arches is usually caused by small amounts of oil burning off from on top of the heat exchangers caused by slightly weeping rocker cover gaskets. Mine does this when stuck in traffic and gets really hot but soon stops once oil vaporised.

I know my rear wings get really hot but not as hot as yours it seems. Hopefully someone with more experience of this will post to help you.

Thanks John,

I have noticed the oil burning off before and as you say this stops. This was definitely different and at a heat that couldn't be right.

cheers

Thanks Mel, I hope not as i wouldn't have a clue what to do but take it in if thats the case.

cheers

Well everybody is saying oil but as u know the oil tank is on the RHS, the cat on the left........[:(]

Seized LHS rear brake caliper perhaps - that would certainly give you a red hot rear wing - although you would notice it through the wheel as well most likely. I'm pretty sure that the only components living in the rear left wing section are the vacuum reservoir for the varioram towards the front of the left rear wing and then the left-hand muffler at the rear of the left wing. I don't think any oil pipework runs through the rear left wing - I thought it ran down the right-hand side of the car so I can't see how that would be causing the high temperatures you are experiencing.

The cat is in the middle across the back Melv rather than on the left as in the 964. There is b*gger all in or near near the left hand rear arch from memory (left hand when looking from the rear) except for the left hand silencer behind the wheel.

Ian.

Exactly the same on mine. It was a leaking rocker cover and when left to idle the smoke given off frightens the life out of you!!! it generally drops onto the exhaust and burns off and you dont need much to give quite a dramatic affect! My levels never actually dropped so leakage must have been minimal!

Forgot to add my wing got very hot also but probably always does when left to stand as you dont have air venting the engine due to movementy. The smoke just brings your attention to that location and then you notice! remember what is hot to one persons touch can be totally diffrent to anothers. I have girly hands where heat is concerned and the wing felt very hot to my touch!

I think John and Mike are right here Chris. The rear nearside wing does get very hot, especially in slow moving traffic or when stationary and I suspect the oil burning off from a slight rocker cover leak has just drawn your attention to it. Maybe you put your hand on the wing while you had a look under the arch to see where the smoke was coming from? Unless you had a reason to touch the wing would you know how hot it usually gets? As Ian says, there's nothing else within the rear wing that would make it hot.
