Ownership update

Hi All,

My porsche 911 99 ownership has certainly been interesting so far :)

1. Right bizarely having not driven car for 4 days, the knocking noise has gone away - i can't understand how or why...

2. Only issue right now is rear spoiler warning light is on, having opened the engine compartment hatch this morning? It is possible to re-set the warning light?

2.I noticed quite a lot of dry compressed leaves in front radiator which i have tried to remove - is there any best technique? do they affect cooling significantly? I have noticed coolant level is slightly low - what coolant liquid is typically used? looks yellow in colour to me...

Thanks,

Steve

The main thing that they effect is your bank balance! Use a Hoover/Dyson with a long reach doofer to get to the leaves and suck those sucks right out! You've got what amounts to nothing more than a very expensive mobile compost heap riding around in the front your car. They will literally just rot through the bottoms of your rads and you'll be presented with a bill for around £500 to replace both of them (give or take a few £)

Once you've got every got of debris out make cleaning them part of your routine for when you wash the car - but do it BEFORE you put the hose of the car or they'll just go horrible and slimy.

Adrian.

Very strange. It's usually the other way round - ie you get a rattling noise on startup after leaving the car for a few days, when oil drains out of the hydraulic tappets.

The light should go out when the car starts moving. If not, you have some kid of fault - usually one of the microswitches which sense whethet the spoiler is up or down.

What Adrian said!

1. Update on the knocking sound...gets stranger and stranger...

Re-appeared after a drive and appears to be once engine is relatively hot (still middle of temp gauge) at approx 85 degrees. I assume 85 is a standard temp when running.

However, it definitely wasn't there upon startup. See what local Porsche Indy thinks next weekend.

Does this suggest anything to do with radiator fan/cooling - since only happens when hot? Definitely no oil leak and oil looks clean on dipstick.

Runs very smoothly and oil pressure is fine which is a good sign i guess.

2. Spoiler light went out during the drive. Have noticed it takes a few seconds to go out after leaving it for a bit but seems fine. Manual override is definitely working.

3. Cleaned out most of the leaves - some seemed very wedged in the far corners....Is this typical 996 issue or sign of lack of maintainence for significant leaves to build up.

1. Sounds like it might be a dodgy tappet. See what the indy thinks. 85 degrees is normal - I don't think you have any cooling problems.

2. Seems perfectly normal to me.

3. It is part of the service schedule to check for debris in this area, but I would suggest it is often overlooked, and a lot of muck can build up in there between services anyway. Some of us anoraks remove the front PU periodically and clear it out, especially where it builds up between the water and aircon rads, which are sandwiched together. There is an excellent DIY on our 'member's only' Technical Articles section. (Just another benefit of club membership [;)] ).

Thanks Richard,

You've certainly sold me the benefits of Club membership and I will be joining as soon as the following link is fixed (it is currently broken):

How do I join you ask? Well you can join online -->HERE<--

Do Club allow payment by CC or cheque only? Also I assume if i joined Monday, I should have a membership to quote Paragon on Saturday?

Also does anyone know if most Indy's (specifically Paragon in Five Ashes, E. Sussex) offer a discount for Porsche Club GB membership)? Paragon suggested tappet too but wanted to see it first as you would expect.

Thanks,

Steve

Looks like the whole club web site is down at the moment. []

You can call the club office on 01608-652911 Monday-Friday 8:30 to 5:00. Speak to Rachel Johnston. They should take Credit Cards.

I don't know if Paragon give discount to club members, but I somehow doubt it. No harm to ask, I guess. Most (but not all) OPCs give 10% discount on parts, and some do special rates on labour.

if paragon offer discount to club members then thay owe me 6 years worth !!
