Owning a 944S2

I am thinking of selling my 2001 BMW 320d and buying a 944s2. The only stumbling block for me is the mpg, I have read numerous reports of people getting below 20 mpg, is this the norm or are these lead footed drivers?. Seeing as petrol is getting ever closer to £1.00 a litre, using an S2 as an every day car could prove very expensive.

Ive been running an S2 as an everday car for about 14 mths, mainly my car is sat in heavy traffic and on a tank of 300 miles gets about 60 miles on the motorway , and does get a blast once a week and Im returning between 24-26 mpg. When I took it abroad with constant motorway driving at about 80mph I retuned late 30's mpg. Even driving with the right foot planted to the floor I still returned 22 mpg.

That's quite a change from a 320d touring. There are probably other issues besides fuel that might put you off. I have a turbo and i get about 22mpg, with a mixture of driving. I would think there would possibly be something wrong with an S2 that consistently returned less then 20mpg.

Sell the BM and buy an S2 will leave you with a fair bit of wedge in the bank.

I suppose its all down to how many mile you intend to drive every year, if you are significantly above 10k a year then i suppose it could get expensive.

I do about 300 - 500 miles a week, mainly motorway/A Road and, prior to putting the chip, induction kit and Janspeed exhaust system on, I was getting 30 - 35 mpg depending on heaviness of foot. I now get 25 - 30.
 
Of course the worst hit for the mpg is the stamping on the pedal to see just how far you can push yourself into the seat this time :)

Just got out of 89 944 S2 and into a boxster - mainly because I prefered driving it to my 04 C180.. And to be honest, the car is just a bit too much of a savage to drive everyday in traffic. That and the bills I kept getting :(

Nothing major done on the car, just new front discs, new tyres, new track rod end, new clutch slave cylinder, new fuel pressure damper, some minor painting, new brake pads, new rear wheel bearing.... And of the course the Irish insult of paying 1300 euro a year in road tax.

I will say that from a driving point of view its on a parr torque-wise with the 320d and ironically probably an easier ride than any BMW with the M sports suspension (that is just too rock hard)..

i had a very clean, very straight totally original car with under 100k on the clock. I guess at the end of the day it was still a 16 year old car and they will definately need a lot more tlc than your BM.

Even still... I hate BMW's anyway...

I actually don't do much more than Andy now. 21 months and 1 day of ownership on the cab and just under 49,000 miles, with very little use between August 2003 and Januray 2004.

Typically it costs me roughly £62 to fill it (at 83.9p/litre) and I get 380-400 miles out of that, 3/4 motorway at 85-90 and 1/4 A-road with traffic lights, junctions, villages etc. When I've done a full tank on the motorway it's made a huge difference - maybe 10% further on a tank which is a lot given that 75% of my normal driving is motorway.
 
Just a guess but I'd have thought that the 320 would be a better all rounder than the 944 and its probably quicker across country as well...?? ( Im basing this on the fact that my 330D is easily as quick as my E28 M5 was and makes my S2 quiver with fear... Its not much of track day car though!
 
I'm no BMW fan and have only ever driven 1; an E30 325i (what a disappointment that was!) but I'd have thought the 320i is decidedly average TBH, probably OK as an A-B machine but well underpoweed for a petrolhead. How you can even think it would be quicker cross country than a well-balanced sports car with a 3 litre engine producing loads of torque is totally beyond me. Or maybe you were joking?
 
It's a 320d fen - not a 320i, so it does at least have torque.

Don't think it'd be a match for an S2 though ~ cross country or otherwise (our other car is a Leon TDI with the same 150bhp and similar 230lbs.ft as a 320d).
