Oxygen Sensor Part Numbers

Getting a little confused, I have been told on my 986 1997 2.5 there are two oxygen/lambda sensors (pre-cat and post-cat). I called Porsche today to confirm the part numbers and they are telling me there is 4 sensors.

If anyone knows can you tell me how many sensors there are and the part number please. Also would an after market sensor be as good or not advised?

RoW 2.5 Boxsters with DME5.2.2 (like yours) only have pre-cat oxygen sensors. 2.7 and 3.2's have pre and post cat sensors. (Edit: US cars all have pre and post cat).

The part number you need is 986.606.126.01. They are made by Bosch, and there are plenty of alternative suppliers. Try www.fpuk.co.uk and speak to Lloyd Deakin. He will give you the Bosch number (and a decent price, I'm sure).

Alos speak to your local motor factor. They usually have a Bosch catalogue and if you ask nicely they will give a discount.

Richard thanks as always spoke to Lloyd he can do good prices and he seemed to know more about this stuff then other folks I have spoken too.

I am really REALLY frustrated now [], anyway following will know I had some issues and have now replaced:
  • AOS unit and pipes
  • Oil Breather pipes
  • NGK Spark Plugs
  • Bank 1 and 2 Camshaft Sensors (Solenoids)
  • All new Coil Packs
After all this the engine check light still came on, and I have been to a recommended Porsche Indy too, went back to read the codes today and surprise surprise its exactly the same set of codes before I replaced anything on this car. Indy says book it in. I feel I am left with Air Mass and/or Lambda sensors, now if I go with indy try and buy the parts cost WAY more then me picking the parts up and replacing them anyway. But the fear being that it's none of those causing the issue.

Looking at those codes, I think it is fairly obvious it is the oxygen sensors.

As for 301 (P1265), that is likely to be a faulty airbag control module.

That does sound reasonable, MAF seemed weird to me, was changed in April 2007 and has done 12,000 miles since then. If its years then maybe it on its way out, but if it's mileage then seems unlikely to me. Going to speak to Lloyd tomorrow he told me to get the fault codes then chat to him or you :) Only thing throwing me now, is that the chap at Jaz said the O2's are adjusting and seem to be working, but that's not an amp test etc, so its possible.

Ignore the Airbag, thats me, I pulled the plug because I use a car seat and don't have the porsche car seat kit, plug is easily accessible so works for me.

If you would like to pop over at the weekend I'd be happy to plug in the tester and give you a second opinion. Drop me an email if you want to give it a go.

Are you saying that PET is wrong? It clearly shows and lists 4 sensors ...........

When I spoke to Lloyd you really seemed to know what he was talking about he said tree are just 2 precat sensors on my model an he was very confident about that.

The RoW (inc UK) 2.5 Boxsters and early 996's use Bosch Motronic DME 5.2.2, which is not OBD2 compliant. They only have pre-cat O2 sensors. US cars ARE OBD2 compliant, which have O2 sensors after the cat. These two after-cat sensors monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converters, and have no effect on fuelling. For the 2.7 Boxsters, and 996's with electronic trrottle, they introduced Motronic 7.2, which is OBD2 compliant, and hence has 4 sensors.
