P & O Ferry Outing 2011

Happy New Year to everyone. After last night's meeting, I believe Mark is putting together a list of possible events for the coming year (fuel price allowing!!) I know that Steve Tomlinson mentioned the possibility of an overnight event similar to last year's Alnwick run by Ian and Sharon Gilmour. I wondered if anyone would be interested in a P&O Ferry run from Hull to Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Bruge etc. I do believe that that they have special offers of £72 for 2 persons (including car) with overnight cabin. Let me know your thoughts and I will collect info and discuss at the next meeting in February. Regards, John

I was just reading other Region's write ups in PP and thinking how lucky they to have such easy access to the continent, completly forgetting the Hull ferry routes. A brilliant idea there John. Our only issue as with all weekends away is child care.

Same problem here Mark, but only with some outings. The advantage with the ferry is that, I believe, you can get a family cabin and there is lots to do on board. I will gather details when next in Hull (possibly today or next week). The only other concern is the weather - I'm not too good on water !! John

I have been talking to Carol about it and she has apparently been going on about us doing this for years, so we are up for it.

If we do it then it doesn't want to be too late in the year so that we don't run the risk of rough seas as I don't cope well with them. As a start it would be good to get some details and see what we can come up with.

Its a lot of water to cross for 8 hours in Bruges, came back on the Zeebrugge ferry late October, small boat, basic accommodation unless you opt for top cabin, food not brilliant. Rotterdam ferry much larger and more comfortable but too far for a few hours in Bruges - traffic is gridlocked in Holland.

We did stay at Bruges overnight in July on our way back from Spa, the Novotel Brugge Centre is perfect for walking into town and has the advantage of a public underground car park beneath it. There was also an Ibis opposite which is possibly cheaper. We found it very interesting and did not see it all on our short stop. The coastal town of Knokke is well worth a visit also has an OPC - roads around this area were very quiet.

The ferry takes a route close to the coast so its not often you have rough seas not like the Bay of Biscay!

Regards
Rita & John

Gent is also great in the summer, 2 cathedrals, a castle, fantastic food and good shopping for the girls.

NH Belfort, Marriott and Ibis are all in the city centre With a cheaper option at the conference centre with free shuttle bus to centre.

I am in Belgium very often, at least once a month and often choose to stay in Gent so may be able to help sort some details if you want.

Can recommend loads of great places to eat and drink.

Ian

That sounds ace! Put me down for that one, not sure who I'll bring but depending on the date I'm sure I can find a body with a spare £30!
