I had this come up yesterday on the way home from an R3 run-out.

I know there are a couple of threads on this subject but I was keen to pick your collective brains. Jeff (Motörhead), you seem to know a bit about this. I do have a Porsche extended warranty which was on the car when I bought it. Should this be covered do you think? I haven’t spoken to the OPC yet.

Thanks!
Funnily enough I came out of the car park on the 2nd coffee stop and had a PSM failure...pulled in the lay-by 1/2 mile down road, turned off restarted and the fault cleared...is your fault still showing now...turning off and on again after clears up things Like this when some spirited driving has confused the car!

I haven’t tried it today, but stopping and starting yesterday didn’t make any difference.

I suppose the PADM is / are electronic engine/transmission/drivetrain mountings?

Does “spirited driving” confuse the car?! Maybe they need an extra engine support like we used to fit to Minis back in the day to stop the engine crashing back and forth.

Hi Gordon,

Yes, I’m sure that the extended warranty will cover the fault. Unfortunately not an unknown occurrence, and quite expensive to fix I believe. Great technology I’m sure but maybe not as robust as we’d like.

Have you checked that you still have the error message today or has it cleared on re-start?

Give the Centre a call and they’ll be able to advise you further. Hope that you get it sorted.

Jeff

Edit: Yes, it’s a problem with the active engine mounts.

Hi Jeff / Simon,

Yes, unfortunately the error message is still there. Been out most of today so will give OPC a call tomorrow.

Thanks very much for your input.

Gordon.

Googled padm faults and see that there appear to quite a few reported issues, albeit unsure if this is isolated to specific models, if the mounts are common in terms of design across different models. Is it known what causes the padm fault - specific driving conditions, specific models etc?

It seems to affect Chrono equipped models e.g. GTS. Why this should be, I have no idea. That would suggest an electronic fault when logic would suggest that it is a mechanical issue.

Hopefully, someone can clarify.

Gordon,

The magnetorheoligical technology involved in the mounts has been around for a long time in suspension dampers so it should be reasonably robust. However there have been quite a number of failures reported online but whether or not that’s significant in terms of the number of cars fitted with PADM your guess is as good as mine.

The Centre will run the necessary diagnostic checks to ensure that the problem‘s not software related before resorting to an expensive replacement.

Jeff
