Can you help me with a couple of paint codes? the first is gaurds red. I've looked through books and i've got two different codes. Without me telling you what they are can you give me your opinion as to what the correct code is?

The second is a black. A mate of mine has a karmann ghia and he's been told it's a porsche black. now from what i can gather there'sonly two main blacks that porsche used. One has a brown pigment added, the other a blue. he was told the code is TC92 but i can't find a reference for this so reckon the info is wrong. Can anyone help out there? Porsche black, the one with the blue added.

Merry Christmas lads!!!! Lets hope we get all those parts we've been asking for over the Year. Yeah, right.

Can't help with the actual codes, but unless you are repainting the whole car, you need to get the paint properly matched anyway, as each batch will be different slightly.

Usual method of doing this on the '44 is to remove the petrol filler cap.

Guards Red (or Indischrot) has been in use since 1973 and has used nine different codes, all for the same colour:

027, 25, 80K, 84A, G1, G8, L80K, L84A, LM3A

During this time there have been four different formulations for slightly different shades.

If the black is a solid black with no metallic content then the Porsche solid black has been the same formulation from 1971 to 2007 whether it is code 04 or A1 or 700. VW generally shares colours with Porsche so the Karmann Ghia is probably the same black (if it still has factory paint)

You forgot to mention that most Guards Red cars are often a mix of nine different shades.......[&:]

You should have a paper sticker under the carpet in the boot and also on the first page of your service book. It will be a four digit code beginning with L

An 85 or 85 car in white should be L90E - Alpine White

There's a list here - http://porsche.elevate.nl/technical/ColorCodes.html

just an aside that list like most others is wrong abut LY7U, its stone grey (steingrau) not slate grey (scheifer). slate grey is more greenish. it confused me for a while that the touchup kit i got with the car bore no relation to the actual colour. [:D]

slate grey is L22D btw

The trouble with paint names is that different regions of the world call the same paint by a different name, so the various online lists may not match the UK name. Different manufacturers also call the same paint by different names - Porsche, VW, Audi, Bently etc all use the same paint but call it different names.

As long as you get paint that is the same code you will have a better chance of a good match (but then some paints have dozens of different variant shades [&o] but that's another story )

Guards Red and Indian Red are one and the same colour. Guards Red is an English language market colour and its always been called Indischrot in German.

I believe the colour is actually known as Light Bronze Metallic.

halfords dont do porsche paint codes, I got a spraycan from auto paint st.helens that was a great match. (http://auto-paint.co.uk/carpaint/)

Bear in mind that some colours fade with age depending on the pigments used so fresh paint may no longer be an exact match anyway.
