Paint job on a 944

I've been looking for an S2 for a little while now. I've just seen one that seemed very good mechanically, with low mileage (< 100k). The price seems about right so all OK. The only downside though is it has a gap in the service history - about 4 years and 60k miles, plus it's had a respray. Superficially the car looks very good but there is flaking paint in various places, e.g. below rub strips on the doors and around the door handles.

Should I walk away - lack of history I can live with (I think) but getting the car to how I would want it, i.e. sorting out the paintwork, sounds like a costly job.

Has anyone got a ballpark figure for a spray job?

Ouch! [:(] May give a couple of bodyshops a call in the morning, otherwise its back to the search......

Paint isn't cheap. The place I use did a cab last year in red for £1,400 though and there is nothing wrong with their work.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Sub 100k miles with no history? So could be well in excess of 100k miles then? They are easy to clock and wear their miles well. If it's had a shoddy enough paint job that the (stick on) rubbing strips and handles weren't removed then what else was skimped on? Why did it need so much paint in the first place?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If I were you I'd keep looking; there's no such thing as a cheap Porsche.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The seller has had it for 8'ish months and got it with 82k on the clock. No history from the previous owner, but the first owner had it for 10 years (from new) and only covered around 30k miles - this is supported by a wodge of receipts from an OPC. So owner #2 put 52k on it in 4 years with absolutely no history and a dodgy paint job.

This is the second car I've seen with a full respray - guess it's not uncommon at this age of car.

Guess I'll keep on looking......

IMO most 944's will have had some paint at some stage - bonnet etc due to age and profile of car but the quality of work re respray states a lot re previous owner/bodyshop who did the job - personally woudnt touch the car with such a huge hole missing in the service history and the mileage cannot be verified.

Fen is spot on - there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Plenty of nice , well cared for 944's on the market - so keep looking

All 944's will have had paint - or almost all. It should be confined to stone chip repair ideally or failing that minor panel damage at worst. It is unusual for a car to have had a full respray and if it has had a bodged one then I would wonder why. Over fussy owners do not get bodges done.

Second point is that it only takes one owner to ruin a good car, regardless of all the other perfect owners who have lavished cost no object maintenance on the car, kept it in a climate controlled garage and used it just enough to keep it fresh but only in sunshine. One negligent owner for even a short time and the car is destroyed.

4years and 52k miles with no history and a dodgy paint job on what sounded like a really nice car to start with amounts to abuse. Don't walk away; run. Unless it's up for about the cost of a decent respray; might be worth a punt then. Actually, no it wouldn't because you'd still be £4k+ into a nice looking car that has had 2 resprays and with unknown mechanicals when £1,000 or £1,500 more could have got you a proper one to start with. Even £1,500 will not go far on an S2 that turns out to be a wrong 'un.

Thanks for the sound advice Fen and Chris - it's a real asset to have access to your points of view. I have duly marked this S2 off my list.

A connected question though, it's V5 said its model was '944 Cabrio' - is this how DVLA classify these cars?

Phil

No. From memory my cab said "944 Cabriolet" and my coupe said "944 Coupe". It isn't beyond the DVLA to make a mistake.

Fen - DVLA make a mistake - never [8D] they sent a whole batch of V5's to our customers telling them they had all purchased a Green Daewoo Matiz !

The V5 for our S2 Coupe states it is a Cabrio, and one of the first Coupes I looked at was also listed as a Cabrio. I actually walked away from that one thinking it may be some dodgy cut n shut type situation []

Looks like its more common than I thought

Exactly the same for mine. Says Coupe under body type though from memory. That puts my mind at rest that there isn't some sort of checkered history with mine too! Had always wondered what the story was with this.

When I looked at my car before I bought it, the V5 had it down as an S. Checked the engine no. and the previous owners sorted the ammendment out when they sent the papers off for change of ownership. It was probably nothing more than missing a digit off as oppose to/coincidence making it into an 'S'.
Diver, I bet that car was a good 'n as well.[:(]

I can top this as my V5 states that I have a 944 Estate! I've never bothered getting it changed.

My 89 S2Cab is going in for a full respray next week for 4 weeks. There was a little rusting due to stone chips around the front arches. The body shop need to repair all this. The car was already resprayed before I got it in 2002. There is a couple of dents and scratches put there by the usual careless drivers parked near me.
It's costing 3000 Euro but extra costs are the side panels, sills, decal etc...
Agree with Fen though. No history is an easy decision on your part.
Kev.

My S2 Cab on V5C shows :-
D.2 Model/Type as 944 S2 Cabrio
D.3 Body type as CONVERTIBLE

But I did have a lot of fun getting an HPI check sorted out - being told the documentation wasnt correct ! it turned out to be the 9th digit in the VIN number being a 2 instead of a "z" a Typo on DVLA's part!
I now have 2 V5C's as DVLA sent me a new one without asking for the old one back!
Sorry to go off the Paint topic but thought it may be of use/interest to someone !
