paint protection film and detailing advice

smallspeed

New member
i spoke to jason a while ago about paint protection film and a local guy who fitted the film to his rs after its re-build, unfortunatley i had my phone stolen and lost the email with the details.. my email has since died aswell so not having much luck with this one!..

a friend is about to pick-up a new car (2nd week april i think) and as its black wants to get it a) detailed and b) covered in the paint protection film (or whichever way around the process is done) from new to avoid stonechips and things

the dealer has agreed not to touch it when it comes in so it doesnt get "cleaned" with their jetwash toilet brush thing in the yard, and are fine with someone coming to their site to clean it and protect it with the film..

does anyone have a recommendation for someone to do the job local-ish to leicester? jason, if you read this and can post your guys details that would be great..

thanks in advance

ben

Ben,

As you're not that far from Grantham I'd recommend you take your car to 'Paintshield' - http://www.xpeleu.com/
This is a very specialised job but they have the clean premises and people to install this film properly, they also do a one piece section for the whole bonnet (boot).
I also have a black car from new, got it detailed first then covered in film. My front had to be re-done several times before getting it right as I tried to save the travelling and got it done more locally. Black is probably the worst colour to fit on as it shows up every mark,
I eventually took my car to Grantham to get the rest done and it was a proper job first time.
I'd recommend you talk to Tom there to discuss, there's discount for PCGB members as well.
If you do go this route I believe they can tuck the film under the leading edges now which would be recommended.
Finally if you want to see how it looks, my car is here http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=53993 , I ended up getting the whole car covered.
I can also vouch for the durability of the film so far, just under 5k miles and it still looks as good as new.
Not cheap, but I'd say probably worth it especially on a black car if you're going to keep it for a while, especially the front, and the rear wheel areas at least.
Good luck !

Hello.

Sorry didn't get back to your email Ben...it got buried in the masses and this just reminded me.

Best guy for the detailing is Glynn O'Donnell www.elite-detailer.co.uk hes done all my cars and did Ollies RS. Mobile 07930 949 821

Paintshield in Grantham for the Paint Protection - Tom, mobile is 07940 521 416

Glyn will come and detail the car in Tom's premises so it will go straight from detail to cover - should be the dogs.

Make sure he tells them both I sent him...I need all the discounts I can get with my car expenditure!

I'll mail you on the shims....

no problem jason, i lost my phone and then my email died too, so been at a bit of a loss as to whats happening or happened recently, who ive contacted/haven't etc!.. so whats the deal with number 3 now; ive heard rumours of a boxster, and also of a 2.8 rsr replica?..

sandy59, its a friends car (alpina b3 biturbo coupe) and is being delivered to BMW in leicester. they seem happy to have the work done on their premises so i think lee is trying to get it done at sytner if possible so the car has done literally zero miles.. BMW aren't even removing the protective film from the panels though so i guess he could just drive to grantham with that still fitted although he was hoping not to have to drive it atall (plus would look like a bit of a dick driving a car covered in white cling film!.. )

I will pass on the info from both of you (seems like a double thumbs-up for paintshield) and hopefully lee can sort something out with both glyn and tom.. Im actually interested in getting this done myself, although i need to spend some money on a front 1/2 re-spray on the car to remove all the stone chips that have built up over the last 16yrs first [;)]

thanks again for the info..
