Paint repairs or re-paint the whole car?

The paint work on my car is getting a little shabby, lots of stone chips from track days, a couple of paint defects from previous repairs and a little bit of corrosion around the rear window. To put it right will require work on almost every panel except the engine cover and spoiler.

Which raises the question; would it be better to have the car re-painted? In practical terms it is the obvious solution, but what are the implications for the future value of the vehicle?

What do people think, how would you approach a car that had be re painted as a potential purchaser?

In answer to your question, as far as I am concerned it would depend on the type of respray and how recently it was done if I was a buyer.

respraying the car is fine, best to keep photographic records, showing it was stone chips rather than a crash which prompted the respray.

If it was done well and the paint looked good a year or so after it was done, I would be happy with that.......I have seen a few cars with recent resprays and there is sinkage etc....looks terrible, it will only get worse over time.

There are many 2.7 etc...that have been resprayed or had the colour changed over the years, they will never be worth as much as pristine original cars, but the owners have probably had more fun with them.

The other consideration is this armourfend and body wrap, so that you can still use the car as you have been.

Your car will look amazing when done, look forward to seeing it at some point.

I think it all depends on the quality of the respray. Given what you have said about so many panels needing paint if it were me I'd go for painting the whole car and getting the best quality job done. These are now very valuable cars (even in this economy it seems!) so get the best job done that you possibly can and enjoy the results.


I am not sure what colour your car is but if it's metallic it's particularly hard to get a good all round match which again supports the full respray idea. Remember to budget for partial disassembly though.
 
My car sounds like yours in that it is an original panel car , but it has had paint in the past and is littered with stone chips.

I think few properly used RS cars will be on original paint. Trackdays on sticky tyres means chips. On my last day out I had rubber marks on the roof!

All 993s get chips on the front too.

Beyond the cars that don't go on trackdays then I'd leave it and let the new owner decide if you ever sell!

A really good spray with glass out and disassembly is in my view not coming for less than £5k and a few track days puts you back to square 1.

I think they look great "run in" anyway!
