Paintwork

Phil, i live over in bournemouth and had front and rear bumpers, nearside wing and offside rear quarter filled and resprayed for £350!

Admittadly this was through a trade contact of my old mans, but i will try and get their number they do all of Meridian Majestic (Chrysler/Masterati) paint work.

Cheers Matt,

Its nice to hear someone thats had an experience of a particular place, this one sounds pretty good, how did you rate the finsh as the price sounds OK??

Fairly local as well.

I have noticed some minor raised paint bubbling on the front left wing (in a narrow line about 2" long). Its only a 2004 car, so I would not expect corrosion, but who knows what happened before I bough the car :0( I think the paintwork is original however.

Most wouldn't even notice this, but I am Mr Perfection when it comes to matters of this nature (to my detriment)

If its corrosion, then I guess I am covered by the 10 year paintwork warranty (?). It has had the necessary inspections.

If its not, and just a paint fault, then I guess the balls in my court. Looks like the paintwork warranty is only 3 years :0(

I am looking at two Paint Shops I could visit, and I was wondering if anyone else has had good/bad experiences of the following: -

Specialised Paintwork, Reading - I've been here before, and they did a good job, but not a Porsche Approved Body Shop

BodyTechnics, Slough - Visited here with the Club, was impressed with the workshop, and the care they 'showed', Porsche Approved Body Shop, but are they really expensive??

A friend of mine who works for Porsche Centre Reading thinks Specialised do a better job than BodyTechnics? But thats just one opinion, any others?

Comments appreciated

Need to determine if it is covered under the warranty first (odds are that it won't be! [&:])

One thing to remember with Porsch ebodyshops is the work is covered for life - as long as you have it inspected every year (free).
Recommend having the work done in the summer in that case as getting the car out in the wet/grit/snow of winter to have it inspected isn't fun.

By they way. No it shouldn't be doing it - not heard of that before.[]

Hi Mark,

By they way. No it shouldn't be doing it - not heard of that before.[]

Yes, story of my life this :0( (Sorry, I always fear the worst, and its usually true)

The car sits on the drive, so its been out there in all the snow we had, not moving. Was wondering if that had anything to do with it? No excuse I know

I get told all the time (by Second Market dealers and Paintshops) that Porsche jsut don't make the Boxsters as well as the old 911's, perhaps I agree now :0

Well, I know that most Boxsters are made at Valmet (not for much longer though) but some of them are made on the same production line at Zuffenhausen, all the bodypanels are stamped out by BMW, plastic parts from the same source... I don't think there is any real difference.
Maybe there was a previous repair done - may not have been serious, could be a bad scratch that was "fixed", but it's not lasted...

Thanks Mark

Anything is possible .... the potential issues with buying a second hand car, even a Porsche

It is very minor, you probably wouldn't notice unless you pawed over it ..... but thats not the point

I just get worried when panels need respraying, because it means other panels need matching too .... and unless its done really well, you can always tell :0(

Although I am told that even brand new cars have panels redone too, if they get damaged 'off the lorry'.

Metallic paint is difficult too, you can't just touch it up! (I'm GT Silver)

So your suggestion would be to visit AFN then, and take it from there?

Cheers

Tim

I'd find out if it is a warranty thing first.
You never know - they might cover it!

Then if it will not be covered by Porsche you can work out if you want to go to Specialised paintwork or elsewhere.

If you bought the car second hand there is every possibility it has had some paint on the front at some point. My year 2000 car had very few marks in the paint when I bought it 2 years ago. It does very few miles with me but now has a lot of chips tiny on the front. Being red there seems to be white primer underneath so the car is peppered with little white spots.

I will get it done by Chips Away when the weather is better but this brings me to thoughts on your car. When I had a 944 before my Boxster it started bubbling on the front of the bonnet. On investigation it wasn't rust underneath just one layer of the many coats it had had over the years not sticking to the layer underneath. So if my Boxster is anything to go by then yours has probably had a previous owner or dealer having paint repaired.

Colin has a good point.

Almost every car sold "pre-owned" by Porsche has had the front repainted...

I can't remember where you bought it Tim. If through a dealer then it's very likely.

Colin,

You might want to investigate Langka if you fancy doing it yourself. I've had great success with it (after a bit of practice!)

Thanks for the suggestion Mark. I am usually Mr DIY as every time I take a car into a garage it comes out with more problems so I only trust my own work. However, me and bodywork rarely get on and every panel has a chip out or bird poop has taken off the paint (previous owner not cleaning it off). I can see any attempt to do it myself would end up with each chip becoming a bigger and bigger mess.

I encountered Chips Away in a supermarket car park locally and they quoted a very reasonable £120 to do every scratch and chip, their work is usually good so it sounds good value.

I say I shy away from bodywork, one reason I got a good deal on my car when I bought it was the front bumper was cracked and held together underneath with gaffer tape. I took this off last summer and glassed it up from behind and intend to fill and make good when the weather warms up. This is probably enough body work for me this year.

Hi Guys

I bought it from Camtune, Godalming ... who are now a Porsche Centre!

Its definitely had some paintwork done, the bumpers were perfect when I bought it.

It might be original paint thats been blended in. You know the deal, when just about any panel needs doing, they have to blend in the surrounding panels so you can't see edges, and re lacquer the lot.

Well thats how it should be done. Cheapy accident repair centres do one panel, because thats all the nasty insurers will pay for :0(

It may well be bubbled due to the 'blend over'.

Looks like I need to visit Porsche, see what they have to say (no expecting much BTW) and go from there.

I just don't like my 'pride and joy' having any marks on it at all ..... obsessive ... thats me

Tim
