Panamera PCM rebooting

Hi,

Pan PCM 3.1 rebooting every 5 mins. Tried hard resetting of unit etc. I suspect hard drive faulty. I found web site on how to clone hard drive and replace with SSD. If my HDD corrupt will it clone?

Only other option sending off for repair. Any advice welcome
 
One of our members recently had exactly the same problem.

Have you tried the reset procedure for your rebooting issue. Worth a try:


BEWARE as you will WIPE ALL STORED DATA since this is a factory reset. The video refers….

I have seen some forums that describe cloning the HDD. I would however be cautious unless you felt comfortable with having a go as its not a straightforward procedure.

Failing that, I think the next course of action would be a repair. It’s probably a loose or dry connection on the motherboard, connector or component failure. Could also be the HDD. There is a Boxster thread on the PCGB forum which gives some more info and possible repairers - not cheap (but cheaper than a new PCM)

The author refers to a repairer that he has used and it would be worth considering removing your PCM unit and sending it down to them:

The removal of the PCB can be done by yourself (you will need the removal tools that you can get on ebay - he made a set himself) or your local independent. The procedure seems straightforward enough:

Panamera radio and PCM removal and installation - PanameraClub.com (insanegarage.com)

If you send the radio off they will diagnose the problem and send you a repair and time to fix estimate. Expect something like £1250 incl. VAT and 3 weeks. Its worked perfectly since after motherboard replacement. You will pay about double that for a new replacement unit unless you manage for find one from a salvage car.

I pre-emptively cloned my PCM HDD and replaced it with an SSD last year; not at all difficult, plenty of step by step instructions out there - took less than 90 minutes start to finish and I’m no computer whizz.
Cost was about £150 including a disk cloner and a top spec SSD. If you feel up to removing the HDD (4 torx bolts, 2 screws and 1 connector) even if it’s failing your local PC expert may well be able to recover the contents and clone you a new one. I’d be trying this before I spent £1250….
Bonus of the SSD is it’s appreciably quicker.

I tried the manual reset using the YouTube links but no joy. I ended up sending off to Cartronics. They wouldn’t give me an estimate over the phone so I got a shock when they said it would be £1300 to repair. I said no thanks so had to pay £90 for diagnostic and postage.

Ended up finding a repair service on eBay for £400 - Navitex. He repairs circuit boards rather than buying new boards etc. Took him 4 days to repair and send back.

If I wasn’t selling my car I would get the SSD upgrade.

Just as a follow up, can you confirm it was the motherboard and not the HDD?

Hi, I was told motherboard not HDD. However, I will check the HDD hasn’t been taken out as paper strip will have been removed. It’s still boxed from repairer and won’t unbox till Saturday 👍🏻

Looks like the HDD cover was opened and resealed

looks like the HDD cover has been removed and revealed with his business seal. Not sure if it was replaced or just tested? I’ve asked him exactly what’s he’s replaced but no response.

Hi Thumpick, looked on my repairs log and I can confirm that in your case part of the internal memory was corrupted which required reprogramming and the hdd was corrupted also. Hope this answer others members questions too.
 
As the initiator of one of the earlier posts on PCM 3.1 repairs on my Boxster, it's good to see Navitex apparently as a new member of our club providing input to this discussion.

Hi BrianJ, I always strive to respond to everyone across all the platforms where I offer my repair services, whether they are current or potential customers. I actually ended up here because one of my potential customers mentioned that someone on a forum claimed I hadn't replied to him :)
