Panamera - why? I don't get it...

Okay, buying VW that I understand, playing and beating the market at their own game, that I too understand... but this I don't. I am not keen on anything it respresents or is:

Profit - as motivated by the big ugly Cayenne.

I don't blame Porsche. They are a business and they are in a constant quest to broaden their global markets. We may prefer their image as an independent, prestige, sports and race car manufacturer, but profit outweighs sentimentality.

It's just a shame that the Panamera and Cayenne designs look so big, awkward and heavyweight.

How many 911 owners defect to M5's AMG Mercs etc once they need that bit more space in back?

So why not build a four seater?

Purists may not like it but history has shown that several times through the years building "Non 911" has reaped profits for company and debatabled saved it at at times

Perhaps the designer was on holiday when they signed off the shape?

I think they are quite confused, it a cross between, this, that and something else. It really isn't self descriptive and that is perhaps what I have the biggest issues with. Don't miss understand me, if it was built by anybody else my immediate feelings etc would be the same.

...Dougie, do you mean to tell me there's no chocolate on Mars?!

Brought to Earth by little green men years ago when they landed in Arizona desert they also collected the stock of Galxy bars as well on the way[:D]

Struggling to understand what your problem with it is. I think you are trying to read too much into things. It's a car. Porsche have released it in response to most other manufacturers releasing similar large coupe's - Merc CLS, Mas Quatroporte, Passat CC, Audi A5, and many many more on their way (Ford are releasing a Mondeo derived one). All cars that share the same concept, just aimed at different demographics. It is a market sector, no more, no less. If you don't like its styling, then that is your taste, but styling sometimes needs to be compromised by practicality and functionality requirements - remember the Audi TT that was style over substance and turned out to be unstable at high speeds resulting in deaths? Just accept the fact that Porsche are no longer one-model car maker - which is a good thing. If you want ugly look at the Masser Quatroporte. Though the proportions of the Panamera are a little... unconventional, I don't think it is ugly. Behind the wheel it certainly looks like a nice place to be, and when you're inside you can't see the exterior so what does it matter?

I can certainly see the appeal for this type of car. I've got a young family so family wagons i'm looking at are basically large estate cars. But in a few years time when I still need a large car, but not necessarily the boot space I'll certainly be pumping for a car of this type - though unfortunately not the Panamera or anything of that level of prestige - unless they depreciate about 90% of their new cost over a few years.

Reports from people who have seen it say it is large, and this worries me more than the styling.

Apparently, it makes the Cayenne look compact, and it will struggle to fit in many uk size parking spaces.

I've no worries about Porsche moving into the 4 seat saloon type market .... but man is the back end of the Panamera UGLY! I think the designer ran out of ideas somewhere and just extended the 911 a bit - yuck. Now it seems to have this middle section which looks totally out of place. I'm beginning to think that stereotypes about lazy Porsche designers may just be right.

I just don't like it and I don't think it's gonna grow on me either. Reminds me a bit of the back end of the old Jensen Interceptor (it's least flattering bit IMHO)

Saw the car in the flesh, so to speak, at the factory in Stuttgart, and boy it is big, but it has real presence, a bit like the Cayenne. The interior looks superb and form some angles, particularly the front three quarter. Rear seats are, as the press have said, roomy with lots of headroom, hence the roofline is compromised. Agree the back end is not the best feature.
