panamera

I saw the new panamera yesterday at lakeside , west thurrock . It is ugly , it just dosnt look right . Seems to be stretched with an ugly rear end not my cup of tea at all .

I'm itching to see one in the flesh. I have warmed to it over the passing month and actually think it is OK and quite like it - but I do like ugly cars. And at the end of the day it drives well and is a nice place to be inside. Pretty cars benefit others when you're in the car, what really matters as an occupant is how nice it is inside and how well it drives, and in those terms I bet the Panamera will have no equals.

I think it looks very purposeful from the front and rear but the side view lets it down a bit. I always compare it to the Maserati Granturismo and would rather have one of those!

The grantourismo is not the competitor is it? It's two doors short and doesn't have big rear seats. Isn't it the quatroporte? If so [:'(] I know I said I like ugly cars, but that is pushing it. It has a face only it's mother would love, and even then only a blind mother.

However those recent shots in some magazine of how a modern interpretation of a 928 might look based on a shortened Panamera chassis looked stunning. I hope they do it - as long as it is a transaxel layout. The CGT and 928 are the only truly good looking cars Porshe have ever made, and the rendered images of what the new 928 could look like made both look like an uglier relative of Bernard Manning. Having said that the teaser shots Porsche released of what the Boxster might look like were much prettier than the car the actually released.

I'm hoping these Panamera's depreciate like a rock. In about 7 yrs time when the S Max has outlived it's usefulness I was toying with the idea of something like an A5 as the family wagon, but i'd much rater have a nice used and well depreciated Panamera. Would probably have to be the v6 version though.

You are right that the quattroporte is it's natural competitor but every time I see a granturismo I can't help but think that it has the side profile that the panamera needs! Interestingly there are 2 granturismos, several 911s, at least 6 rs4s, a gallardo, an ariel atom and loads of tasty BMW m cars, etc. on my estate but nobody has a Panamera even though the OPC is 10 mins away. Maybe they are just too niche to see many around?

I've got the only 944 though :)

Quote of the year? [:D]

I wish my neighbours were all as discerning! []

To be fair, I moved from a neighbour with a 944 to a neighbour with an RS4 and an immaculate RS2000, but that's some tally of really nice cars there. Do you think you should call it an "estate"? [:D][:D]

Was lent a Panamera 4S for a day this week,i am a massive Porsche nut and really wanted to like it....
Positives-Great build quality best of any Porsche model yet, great spaceship looking dash/controls,great front seats- very adjustable, spookily silent running at motorway speeds, sports exhaust has a noisy button makes it sound very Nascar, really adjustable ride limo to stiff...
drawbacks/negatives-Only four seats in a luxury car, rear seats are narrow no legroom and hard to get in to- the angle of the rear sloping window and the huge sill does not work,Steering is totally wooden, not enough room inside for four adults to make a long trip- at best you comfortably fit two adults in the front and then some older children in the back at best- i would go nuts in the back on a long trip (so would my brother and he is 5ft10),The car does not really fit into a market slot as far as i can see its deffo not a sports car and it really isn't a luxury big car... for me it is the weakest product in the Porsche range as it doesn't actually do anything really well.I really wanted to like it as i said before but if i wanted a big family car from Porsche i would stick with a Cayenne which covers distance comfortably and with big luggage,if i wanted a sports car for covering long distances i would get a 911.Really sorry but i just didn't get it at all as a product.

That's funny Mark - your positives and negatives are basically the inverse of pretty much every write up i've read about the car so far i.e.the positives are the way it drives (not just the way it drives for a big heavy car- the way it drives full stop) and the space in the rear, the negatives being the space-ship dashboard (which I quite like). Just goes to show you can't really rely on write ups and there is no substitute for having a go yourself.

Most of them are prats though! The guy with the White Gallardo spider who drives around with roof down at night is a prize nob as are most of the Range Rover Sport brigade around here. The guy with an Rs4 avant and ariel atom is a good un though, have had many chats and been out for a spin with him.

I don't know what else to call it other than an estate though, residential community perhaps :)

The best has to be the family about 10 doors down with a 993 as their main car, he drives it very respectably and she absolutely hammers it when she's on her own, good girl!

Apologies for the odd quoting, I do most of my browsing and posting on my iPhone and it comes unstuck every now and again.

Spoke to my OPC today, order today for Panamera and you won't get delivery 'till next April/May, none available on the network and demonstrators reserved at least for next year. So somebody likes it!
Haven't driven one yet, but quite like the look, though I've apparently got no taste (see below).

Petrol head mate with plenty of means and big new car hstory (944, 911, astons, 'rarri's etc) booked a test with local opc and they wouln't let him drive it and expected him to place an order based on a 20 min drive at 40mph from the passenger seat - he left somewhat underwhelmed to put it midly. He is 50+ with 20+ years no claims...

You have to remember that Mark drives very well sorted 944's, so the Panamera has a lot to live up to in the feel and handling department [:D]. Technology has moved on plenty in the past twenty years but no amount of electrical wizadry can disguise the bulk and weight of modern cars. 'You cannae change the laws of pysics'

Disappointed to hear the rear seats aren't really full size [&o]

They(the rears) are a "full size" seat but they are by no means the seats i would expect in a luxury car mean't for driving long distances- the front seat is very close to your knees with a normal person in front sitting comfortably and the sloping bit at the back is just by your head,it felt claustraphobic in the back.Still not convinced about PDK either. Its just not for me but as with all the other parts of the Porsche range am sure it will be a huge hit.

Saw one for the first time at the NEC today. I think it looks much better in the flesh, I actually quite liked it.

I think it is really nice for the market it is made to fit into!! The four door coupe look is big business now and has been for the last couple of years and will be for the future. Porsche have got it right again. People who have outgrown their 911s, boxsters and caymans such as families want to stay within the brand and now have a choice of the Cayenne and now this.
