Pandamera S

Yes yes I know this is the 997 forum but as a 997 owner I thought this was most relevant :)

This morning I dropped my car off at OPC Cambridge for them to have a quick look at my recently-crappy brakes. Got loaned a Panamera S for two days whilst they check things out.

Has anyone else driven one of these? My god. My first thoughts were "what a barge", followed by "hmm, sounds rather nice" when i turned the key, followed by "OMFG I seem to be doing 120" as I exited the M11 slip road.

What a rocketship. It handles and steers and stops and goes like nothing I have ever driven that size. Plus, cruised back to my home 60 miles away at 90mph near-as-dammit and it's returned 29mpg, it's super-confident in the wet and and I blipped the PDK down to second coming into a slippery wet roundabout, the engine note sounded like a Ferrari. Unbelievable!! I cannot imagine how fast the Turbo is if this is the 'S'.

Panda-mera? [:D][:D] S stands for slowwwww. I guess it's what you are use to though [8D] PS: any Playstation Gran Tourismo 5 people out there driven the Red Bull X2010 yet? No THAT is fast!!! TopGear lap time in at least 38s: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJe-dYDptSs]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJe-dYDptSs[/link]

Mmm, good reason not to have one as a courtesy car as I have a habit of getting excited by new models and ordering them [] Helen seems happy with hers, as well.

Is OMFG a "Sport Plus Plus" function on the Pandamera ...!!!![:D][:D] Lol !!!

I had a test drive in one, after he showed me Launch Control I was in awe, OMG how can that thing go so fast! It has a stunning interior, nice steering feel (not overly servoed like the S-Class) great brakes, comfy, lovely PDK gear changes....it's just a great car, I'd have one.

There is no doubt that Panamera is an impressive piece of kit - a triumph of engineering competence competing with laws of physics. [8|] The question is why would anyone buy one? [&:] Performance-wise Pan does nothing 911 doesn't do - but in far superior fashion. As a passenger car, it is unattractive, unwieldy, has poor rearward visibility, poor economy, uncomfortable rear seating and will suffer high depreciation. There are plenty of more practical and economical alternatives on the market. Still, with luck, it will be a huge success and provide Porsche with plenty of profit to continue developing their proper sports cars. [:)] Regards, Clive

Not to mention be seriously cheap (ish) to buy in 18 months time. The one I'm driving to day is for sale at £73k and I reckon it was £85k list new. http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_car?sid_=51545382TGQXSQIUUFKBSQYL5VH2IQQ&pnr_=1&lnr_=4&caller_=

I've heard of a 3 year guaranteed value deal from an OPC on a Panny turbo of around £30k, Ouch! Alex have you seen the 'ring time for the X1? One guy did it in 3:29...90 degree cornering at 230mph lol! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQCOm1KCBT4

I earned the Red Bull X2010 (renamed by GT from the X1) over Xmas whilst my Porsche was sitting in the garage out of the snow. I have yet to try it on the ring but yes, it is MAD to drive as the fans literally suck the car to the ground as it drives along - at fast OR slow speed (unlike normal aerodynamics). It apparently would pull 8-G in corners and was designed by Adrian Newey himself. 550-ish kg with 1550-ish bhp is mental enough without it's corning abilities. It takes quite a lot of time behind a PS3 steering wheel to just be able to do a lap in the car without flying off!

They do make a fabulous noise without a doubt [8D] They are also selling very well worldwide just not that well in the UK, as written in Porsche Post they nearly double the numbers of 911 sold, although we are towards the end of the 997 cycle.. It does offer more than the 911 for a purpose- chauffeur and luxury travel, your Russian oil tycoon can't get in the back of a 911 whatever flavour it is [;)] I'm grateful for the car as it gives Porsche the money to hopefully make the new 911 something very special and not its bread and butter. garyw PS Mat, did they sort the brakes??

I personally think Porsche are going to move away from the 911 as the flagship and towards the new 929 which will be shown in Detroit Auto show this month. The 911 will go forward as just another mass produced sports car...

[:D] and once you get used to driving it it becomes easier to settle down and then (we've found) the economy gets very good for such a big car. at one point we had it showing averaging over 36mpg, unfortunatly since then we've done some towing and the average is showing under 30mpg again []....which is still alot better than i managed out of my 997c4S

ORIGINAL: Helen Goff for such a big car.
I recently looked quite seriously at getting one (well it was an excuse to drive up to OPC Silverstone) but at 4970mm it's very BIG and more than a foot longer than comparable cars and wider too. It seemed to me that the extra bulk didn't translate into any obviously useful additional capability and my overall impression was that it had been designed more with the lucrative North American market in mind. Very nicely appointed interior though.

Blimey Alex the time required to earn the X1 runs into the hundred hours+ playtime! Did your family see you at all over Christmas? :)

25 level A-Spec, 36 level B-Spec, 95% game complete when last I checked... So yeh, spent way too much time driving virtually whilst the snow has been here!

Well just had the call from the OPC - taking the Panda back tomorrow, now the work on my 997 brakes is done. The inside of the discs have become glazed slightly, resulting in soggy pedal feel, so they've skimmed 'em off. Still, at least it will be a fairly spirited and enjoyable drive down to Cambs in the morning.

know what your saying, but i'm a country girl so size dosn't really matter infact it can be an advantage. if i lived or had to visit a large town/city often then i definatly wouldn;t even consider owning a Panza. they are HUGE. it definatly wouldn't go into a average UK multi storie car park.
